Prologue

February 27, 2011

Her eyes fluttered open.

Looking at the clock, it was already 7:45, her classes start at 8 o’ clock, to make it short, she was going to be late.

Panicking, she fell of the bed, tangled in her sheets. She hurriedly got up and did her morning rituals.

After 10 minutes, she was already barging down the grand stairs of their large house, dressed in the school uniform of their prestigious school, a white button up blouse, a red blazer on top with the school’s seal, a black bow in her collar, a black skirt reaching her knees, and white socks and black doll shoes. Her dark hair left uncombed, while her glasses were unbalanced on her nose.

She rushed into the kitchen only to find it void of the people she wanted to see that day. Immediately, she was greeted by the maids.

Disappointed, she just grabbed an apple off the bowl from the center of the long table, ignoring the sumptuous breakfast prepared for her, and ran to the double doors where the driver was waiting for her. She got in the car and they drove off for the 10 minute drive to school.

She forgot that her parents were in a business trip that week. She just hoped that they would come home that day. Maybe she was just over assuming, but a girl can dream, can’t she?

When she got to school it was already 8:13, she was already late. After thanking the driver, she rushed inside the school and headed to the principal’s office to get her slip. After facing the secretary who could care less about anything, she went to class.

“You’re late”, said Mrs. Minerva Thompson, her homeroom teacher, with a reprimanding look. She was one of those small, old, cranky women, who feast on the despair of her students. She was wearing black slacks, navy blue button up blouse, and flats which is the school’s uniform for teachers, her hair a mess of white curls on top of her head, reaching just above her frail shoulders.

As if it isn’t obvious enough, she thought, resisting the urge to roll her eyes. She just handed the slip to Mrs. Thompson, and sat down on her seat at the back, next to the window. The chair next to her was empty. It was her best friend’s seat. I guess I’ll be alone today, she thought.

Her classes went by in a blur. She wasn’t paying attention to any of them. She just stared outside the window, watching as the birds flew by, absentmindedly playing with her pen and having deep thoughts. She didn’t even notice that it was already lunch break.

Walking towards the cafeteria, a bunch of students who were roughhousing bumped into her, not even bothering to apologize. She just glared at them as they walk away. Maybe they just didn’t notice me, she thought with a sigh.

The menu at the cafeteria that usually made her drool didn’t seem appetizing today. She wasn’t even hungry, mainly because she had enough from the unfortunate things that happened to her just this day. Looking around the cafeteria, she saw familiar faces sitting at the round tables, chattering about how good their day was. Life really is unfair, she thought. She exited the cafeteria and went to the courtyard, sat under a willow tree, and waited for the end of the lunch break.

Just like her morning classes, her afternoon went by in a haze. After the final bell rang, all the students rushed out the door, finally free from prison. She packed her things and walked leisurely to the double doors, her driver probably waiting for her in the car at parking lot.
