Earlier when I looked,

I saw someone as gilded,

As pampered and shielded,

As a canary in a cage

Trapped by the barrier of her age,

By all those who thought her naive,

Weak and meek, too frail to survive;

In a world of connivery,

And conspiracy and trickery.

So they stood sentinel, guarding her

Flanked her from the sides, screening her

From the prying eyes

And the remorseless lies.

But now when I look

I see abundance where there was dearth

An ocean where there was a firth.

I see bravado and grit,

And intelligence and wit,

All the of the past naivete gone

And the frown of uncertainty, tactfully withdrawn,

Replaced with a smile full of conviction

A full-blown toothy smile without restriction.

This happened because I decided to fly

Despite all warnings; some genuine some wry.

Now when I look, I see a completely different her,

A successful me, smiling from the mirror.
