"The weather was unusually warm for the last day of October (Lee 341)." The vibrant colors of the leaves falling from trees diseased by fall, hit me with the power only nature could control. But, even among the startling beauty, something was off. I didn't notice it then but, looking in retrospect, I do not know I my eyes overlooked the film of darkness over the trees and the cold stone steps. As I took the liberty of a walk, I heard a loud rustle in my neighbor's rose bushes. Quickly, I turned around fast enough to break my neck. When I looked in the once flourishing rose-bush, I saw a slight black gleam between two of the now wilting red roses. I blinked wanting these noises to go away.
Now, before you call me crazy, I am not hearing things. Since I was adopted, these rustles and whooshing sounds had followed me wherever I went. I didn't want my new parents to give me up, so I didn't tell them. Or anyone for that matter. People don't really appreciate that kind of thing.
I took a shaky breath in, telling myself that I was alright, physically and mentally. But I found out quickly that I had spoken too soon. As soon as I turned around, slender hands grasped my mouth and covered my nose. The caramel colored hands were small enough to be a female's but the hard and thick callouses told me this was a man accustomed to hard labor. I tried to remember all the things Amanda, my mother, had taught me about self-protection, but before I could recall the kicks and punches, the vibrant colors I had admired just a minute ago were fading and darkening at the edges. I quickly realized my lungs were not filling with air and then all the colors faded and I was out like a light.
