He closed the door and flipped a switch. The screaming stopped.
"A very, very, long time ago, about 2000 years, a little boy was killed by a beast that was ruled by the moon," he started.
"What does that even mean?" I asked.
"Don't interrupt, I'm telling a story." He sounded angry but I saw sadness a pain that filled his eyes, dejected.
"He was killed by an animal who was half human, half beast, that morphed at the full moon."
"Werewolves," I said, "are works of fiction. That doesn't make any sense."
"Fiction. Tell that to my brother who was killed 2000 years ago."
"How are you-"
"I said don't interrupt. I'm still telling the story."
"We lived among werewolves those long years ago, me, my sister, and my two brothers. We, with my parents, were a happy family and we were safe, or so we thought. One night my brother decided to see the men turn into beast when the light orb in the sky rose. They couldn't control themselves and he couldn't run fast enough. The next morning, we saw his body lying on the ground blood pouring out of his barely functioning veins."
I gasped in disgust.
"He was killed so close to morning but we couldn't save him. We tried everything. My mother called on the spirits, we tried to go to the village healer but nothing could fix him so he died shortly after we found him. My parents wanted to protect me, my brother and my sister, the remaining family and the only way was to go against the laws of nature created a new race that could overpower the man that turned and overpower the orb that grows in the sky. But there had to be something that could be a weakness so, instead of being ruled by the moon, we were ruled by the Sun. Besides that, we are indestructible. We were the predators. In theory, we could feed on those who hurt us, drain them of their blood. It was good for the time being. We drank blood of those who had already been killed, but soon we needed to kill them ourselves. That's when everything changed. In this new land my mother hadn't been completely faithful to our father. She met a man and soon she was with child. He had been cursed by a witch in previous times and he was ruled by the moon, a werewolf. He was cursed and then so was his child. You want to guess who happened to be cursed? ME. We learned that to enact the curse, you have to kill someone you are close to and that I had not yet done. That is when everything changed. Vampires kill." Tears came to his eyes. "I never meant for it to happen," he said, pain filling his voice. "I'd met someone in the village, the daughter of a werewolf. She had long blonde curly hair and she was beautiful. More beautiful than any flower I had ever come across, I was in love with her she was mine. Neither of our parents approved but that never stopped our midnight meetings. One night it got too passionate but that might not have been a problem if I hadn't been turned into a vampire. I tasted her blood and I could not stop. Once I had saw what I had done, I couldn't handle it anymore. Then the full moon came. Every bone in my body broke as I went through the transition of becoming an animal, a monster. They had killed my brother. It was a true curse to be ruled by the moon and by the sun. My mother found a way to hold the animal in me at bay so that I was only ruled by the sun. When my father found out that I was part werewolf, part vampire, he was so mad at my mother that he left her and went to a different part of the world. Then she found a solution to that we will not ruled at all. A ring that kept the sun at bay so that it would not burn our skin. We were finally indestructible. Except for one thing." The anger on his face overtook the pain that had found its place previously. "Since we were not made by nature, we were made by dark magic, nature would be our enemy. The spirits conspired with mother nature to create a loophole. There was a tree, one single tree, that could kill us. It grew in present day Texas. It flourished in a small Texan town. No one would think anything of it. But someone has done their research. They followed the remaining members of my family. Studying us, talking to our enemies, finding our weakness. They found the tree and cut it down."
"Isn't that a good thing? That they cut it down?"
"It would have been if they didn't make it into weapons. The only way I can die is if I get stabbed in the heart with one of those stakes. Now, let's jump back to the present. These wonderful people have found the weapons and they plan to kill me." He turned and smiled at the two men sitting in the chairs.
"I still don't understand." Maybe Mr. Creepy Smile can give me a straight answer. I'll ask it slowly. "What does this all have to do with me?"
"I'll give you an answer, but it won't be a straight answer. I have a question. You have noticed your powers, yes?"
"Of course."
"From what you have heard today, where do you think that power comes from?"
"If you had asked me yesterday, I would have said my imagination, but today I say, the spirits. I'm a witch?"
"Exactly."
