Chapter Eight
It was the sound of breaking glass that made Emmie open her eyes, when she looked around nothing made sense, until she realised that she was upside down and looking at the back of Taiven's coat. She was about to let him know she was awake when she remembered that he had fangs, her head spun, almost making her faint again. When he had looked up, after cutting off the head of the last of the creatures that had attacked them, his eyes had fixed on her. She had gasped, drawing his attention, repulsed by the sight of him cutting through the things flesh and bone so easily. The sounds had turned her stomach, making her feel faint. But the sight of Taiven's fangs, the way his once dark eyes were suddenly a startling silver, had scared the hell out of her. He had told her he wasn't human, he had saved her life, but actually seeing him in what she assumed was his true form had tipped her over the edge.
Emmie felt Taiven's shoulder and neck muscles bunch as he turned a little, then straightened up again, before carrying her up a couple of steps and into what appeared to be a kitchen. It wasn't her kitchen, she lifted her head a little to look around, then instantly regretted it when Taiven stopped moving. He lifted her carefully off his shoulder, placing her in front of him, not letting go of her until he was sure she wouldn't fall.
"Are you alright?" He asked, bending a little so that he could look her directly in the eyes. "One moment you were standing, the next you were on the ground, I couldn't find any injuries?"
"I fainted," Emmie replied, relieved that Taiven looked completely human again. His eyes, in the darkness of the room, looked black. When he spoke there was no sign of fangs, no sign of the grin he had on his full lips as he had cut off the Thiassuns head. "Where are we?" She asked, before Taiven had a chance to ask her anything else.
Closing the door they had just entered by, Taiven answered. "We're on the edge of what seems to be a town, I found an empty house, so we're safe until the Thiassuns catch up.
"You outran them, but we haven't lost them?" Emmie asked.
Taiven shook his head as he turned back to face her. "It takes a lot to lose a Thiassun, they are born trackers. I can outrun them, but I don't want to drag them through towns and villages, the death and destruction would be unimaginable. So I decided to heal up and let you rest, then we can take a car and lead them out into the countryside."
"Take a car, you mean steal one?" Emmie asked. "I don't know how to do that, and we could get in trouble. And what happened to going to my place, you said we were going there?"
"That was before the Thiassuns decided to start burning things to capture you, I had hoped they would try not to attract attention, but it seems they intend to break every 'protected planet' law they can. If I take you to your home they will burn and destroy everything in their path until they find you, I can't allow that. Taking a car will be no problem, I am trained in all areas of technological progress, for all of the known planets." Taiven stated. "This 'fainting,'" he added, "does it happen often?"
Swallowing nervously, the sight of Taiven's eyes and fangs again swimming before her eyes, Emmie shook her head. "I can't remember ever fainting before in my life, it must have been the shock of everything that has happened."
"That's not what your memory is telling me," Taiven replied, taking a step closer to Emmie, "I apologize if my appearance scared you."
"I thought you didn't like nosing around in other people's heads, I thought it was too draining?" Emmie asked, scared and annoyed at him.
