I wasn't supposed to see what happened. I wasn't even supposed to be there. I should have just stayed at my friends house like my dad said. Now my life will never be the same.
I walked into the living room of my new home. This was where I was going to be living until they caught my father. Therefore I figured I would be there for a while.
I walked into my new room and my "mom" followed.
"You're safe here. You don't have to be scared anymore." She said.
"How can you be so sure about that. What if he finds me? You can't guarantee that he won't." I replied
"No. I can't. But I can guarantee that we will do whatever it takes to keep you safe. This is a remote place and it is probably the last place he would ever think to look." She tried to assure me. "Now why don't you finish unpacking and get ready for dinner."
I did as she said. The police had told me to pack lightly and I had. It only took me a half hour to finish unpacking. I walked downstairs to the kitchen and sat down. We said grace, which was something I wasn't used to. I didn't really have an appetite for anything so I excused myself early and went up to my room.
I sat in the bed thinking the same questions that I had been thinking ever since I witnessed the "incident". "Was it my fault he hurt her? Was it because I didn't go home with a friend?" I still think it is because why else would he threaten and come after me the way he did? At least the neighbors called the police when they saw me running through the yard and him chasing me. I got away just I'm time. As soon as he heard the sirens, he ran into the woods and they still haven't caught him.
I fell asleep pondering those questions. I kept dreaming about that terrible night that I lost my mother forever. I woke up suddenly in a cold sweat. I had been having dreams like that ever since it happened. Then I heard something scrape up against my window. Cautiously I walked over to the window and looked out. I saw something in the distance but it was too dark to make out what it was. Then it became clear. It was a person and he was looking directly into my bedroom. I ran to get my "mom" and awoke her.
"There is someone looking into my room! He found me! Now he is going to do the same thing to me that he did to my mother!" I screamed.
She ran into my room and looked out my window.
"There isn't anything here. It's ok. You're safe here and he isn't going to find you. You just imagined it. Calm down. Everything is going to be alright." She assured me.
After I had calmed down enough, she went back to bed and told me to do the same. After she left I went to my window. I looked out it and there wasn't anything. Just blackness. I quickly closed my curtains and got into my bed, making sure I was facing away from the window.
I laid there for a while but I couldn't go back to sleep. I sat there and pondered the same questions that I had been thinking about earlier. Tomorrow I had to start school. I wouldn't know anybody there. All my friends were back home going to the same school that they had been going to for their entire lives. I would probably never see my friends again. I laid in my bed and waited for morning to come.
The light finally brightened my room. Today was the big day. My first day at my new school. I got ready and ran downstairs. Laurie ( mom) had breakfast ready when I got down there.
"You need to eat something. You've got a long day ahead of you." She said.
"I'm really not hungry. I don't think I'm going to eat breakfast today." I said.
"Please eat. You're going to need the energy."
I refused again and she didn't make me eat anything. We drove to school in the red pickup and she went inside with me. We headed directly to the office and walked into the principals office. He handed me my new schedule and called a young girl to show me around and show me where my classes were.
When she got to the office, she took a glance at me and rolled her eyes. I could already tell we weren't going to be very good friends. She already didn't like me and I hadn't even said one word to her.
"My name is Donna and I got to show you around today." She said. She didn't seem to happy about that either.
"My name is Cass and thank you." I replied trying to sound cheery and calm.
She rolled her eyes at me again and told me to come with her. Apparently, I had all my classes with her. Yay me. After 4 th period we had to go to lunch. I walking in with Donna, but when we got our food, she told me to go find somewhere else to sit. I didn't really eat and I took my tray up to the window at the same as Donna. My tray was completely full and before I got to the window, she came up to me and smashed my tray up. I was now wearing my lunch. Donna and her friends laughed at me but, one person didn't look too happy. He came up to me and helped my get my food out of my hair and everything. I knew I had seen him in some of my classes before.
"Hey. I'm Ethan. Are you ok?"
"Yea, I'm fine. I'm Cass." I replied.
"I think you might want to find a different person to show you around. Can I see your schedule?"
I gave it to him and he skimmed it over. He handed it over too me.
"We have all the same classes. If you want, I could show you around." He said.
"That would be nice."I replied.
"Great! You can come sit with me for the rest of lunch if you want and don't worry about Donna and her friends. They are just a bunch of snobs." He said quietly.
We went and sat down at his table and finished lunch.
It was finally time to go home and I was more than ready. Today had been possibly the worst first day in the entire history of first days. My clothes were stained from the lunch I had "spilled" all over me. Plus, after that, I found out that the only reason Ethan even helped was because his friends had bet him and he made sure I knew that by telling me how stupid I was for even thinking that someone of his status would ever even talk to me. Therefore, I spent my entire rest of the day hunting for my classes. But I didn't tell anything like that to Laurie. I didn't wNt her to worry so when I got in the car I told her that I had a great day. I think she bought it.
As soon as we got home, in went straight to my room and sat on my bed.
