School had just got out for the last time before summer. Others ran off with their friends to have sleepovers and go shopping. I, on the other hand, made my way to the local middle school where my younger sister was attending. As of today, she was a second year. I still remember her being extremely small and chasing me around the house, grabbing my leg when I'd try to leave her. We had both grown up so fast.

I myself was going into my second year of high school as a sixteen year old. I was excited to almost be done with the twelve years of torture I had been put through, but I was also terrified because I had no clue what I was doing afterwards. A frown fell upon my lips at the thought.

'I really need to start preparing...'

I continued walking down the sidewalk with my schoolbag slung over my shoulder, an ominous wind blowing through my shoulder length black hair. I tousled my bangs as they settled just above my red eyes. I quickened my pace as I saw a massive black orb appear in the sky in the school's direction. As the front doors of the school came inside, my speedy walk turned into a sprint as I saw a gaping hole in the building. I instinctively ran inside, hearing shouts down the corridors.

After moments of running to look for my sister's classroom, the shouts stopped. The building had become eerily silent and I knew that it wasn't a good sign. I finally found classroom 1-B and slammed the door open. There was not a student in sight, but all belongings such as bags and writing utensils remained. The teacher's desk had papers strewn upon it hastily, as if they had been startled. As I studied the mess, a yellow orb was caught in the line of my peripheral vision.

I shot my head toward the window and saw a huge white monster staring at me with its single, glowing yellow eye. My eyes widened in fear and I sprinted out of the classroom without hesitation. I deemed the building as empty and decided that my sister, Mei, had evacuated the building. I slammed the door shut behind me to block my body from the creature's vision. I sprinted down the hallway but skidded to a stop as I saw a lilac, spider looking thing staring me down around the corner with that same beady eye.

I immediately turned around and sprinted down in the opposite direction. I heard the sound of its metal claws clambering after me with pace. I sprinted my heart out, forcing my legs to move quicker and quicker than ever. As I was running, I couldn't help but reminisce on pictures my sister would draw that looked exactly like these monsters.

'What the hell is happening?'

I ran all the way home, somehow losing the purple creature behind me. I stopped on our street as I stared at what used to be my home. Half of the roof was gone along with a part of the second floor, like something crashed into it. Other houses looked similar, but I could only focus on mine. I ran to the rubble and searched for my parents or Mei but found nothing but debris. I turned the corner that lead in the direction of the nearest shelter, praying that they had headed there for the attack.

As I looked up, I found my mother standing in the middle of the street, gaping at the creature before her. It appeared to be another one of the large white ones who returned her stare. His eye suddenly began glowing and my mother finally turned around to face me. I noticed tear streaks on her face as she spoke, her short hair blowing slightly.

"Hanako, run!" she yelled out. A bright light emanated from the creature's eye, blinding me momentarily. When my vision refocused, my mother had vanished in thin air.

"M-mom?" Tears began to blur my vision and my hands shook. "Mom!" I screamed. I turned and did as she told me. I ran as fast as I could, wherever my legs would take me. I found myself running into another purple creature and changed my route. I could hear it chasing after me but didn't even think about turning around. A glance over my shoulder could either make or break me at this point.

Before anymore thoughts could run through my cranium, I tripped over a cracked piece of asphalt that stuck up from the street. My body slid across the pavement, scratching up my bare, pale legs. I heard the sound of metal coming closer and closer and protected my head as I curled into the fetal position. I grit my teeth and squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for whatever was going to happen next.

The loud sound of a slash and then two large metal crashes on the ground brought me back. Silence followed and my curiosity peaked. I opened my eyes slowly and found a tall man standing before me in a black trench coat that flew in the wind. He gripped a glowing yellow sword tightly with both hands.

He turned around to reveal no other than my uncle Shinoda. He sheathed his blade and focused his attention on me. He held out a hand for me and I reached for it hesitantly. My family knew that he had a weird career but he never specified what he did.

'I guess I know now.'

He picked me up off the ground and released my hand so I could dust off my skirt. Tears had been flowing down my face without me knowing until Masafumi wiped a tear off my cheek.

"What happened?" More tears ran down my face at his question. I remembered my mom disappearing and not being able to find my sister.

"Mom, she," I choked. "She was standing in the street, and, and this white thing had a glowing eye. Then all of a sudden, I can't see and then she was just gone. She was just gone," I sobbed. "I never saw my dad, and I," I choked again. "I couldn't find Mei." My uncle reached over and grabbed me into a hug. He held me around my shoulders while I clutched at his coat, soaking it with my tears.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there. You know, your sister had what we call a Side Effect. She had the ability of foresight, visions of the future. I tried to tell your mother but she never believed in any of this. We have an asset with the same Side Effect. So much of this could've been prevented with your sister's help." My tears had begun to dry and I had just wanted to hold onto him longer. He was all I had left now.

I pulled back from his embrace and looked up at him with watery eyes.

"What do I do now?"

"You're gonna stay strong and come live with me. I will train you to defend yourself and you will finish your education. But for now," he reached in his pocket, "you join the fight." Shinoda handed me a small rectangular piece of technology that felt slightly heavy. "You will use this to protect yourself." I flipped it around in my hand, examining the tech. "Hold it out so it can scan your body." I did as told and gripped it tightly holding it firmly in front of my body, my hand shaking slightly. "Repeat after me: Trigger on."

I gulped as I was still unsure about what may happen. I followed my gut and trusted my dear uncle in hopes of looking to the future.

"Trigger on."
