Prologue

"If you do not work you will repeat," said Mr Gold, head of high school.

"Oh yes! I remember now. Thank you. Well I do not have the work. I'm sorry," I say breaking into tears.

"Well, that means you will be repeating son."

I could not hold myself. I ran outside. I jumped up onto the railing of the verandah and sat there and cried. My idea of repeating is not going to work. I should have just handed in my work. I now have to repeat and see if my stupid idea will work or not. I heard the door open. I wipe my tears away and just pretend that I'm happy.

"Hey. I'm sorry I had to break the news to you. You could have helped the situation by doing your work. I understand you are upset."

"I'm not upset. I guess I should have done my work too."

"It's ok. I won't tell anyone you were crying. I saw you through the window."

I looked at the window and could see the blinds open and I just ran inside to my carers. I hugged them both.

"You need to go to class and do your work. You need to keep working hard. We are not mad with you. We are upset for you," said my mum.

"I want to go home. I don't want to go to class. I got next year to do my work," I said through tears.

"Come on Phill. You have to go son," said my dad.

"I will see you guys when I get home," I said as I ran out of the room and to the bathroom.

Once I got in there I washed my face. I than went out and got my bag and went to the head of high school.

"Hello?" I asked.

"Yes. Come in Phill," said Mr Gold.

"Where do I need to go?"

"Here is your new timetable for the next four weeks."

"Thank you. I better get going."

"You're welcome. Just come here if you need help or want to talk. You have matured well in the last four years. You still got a long way to go. I hope in the next three years you mature into someone your age. I am here for you Phill, not against you. Here have some tissues."

I grabbed a tissue and blew my nose and threw the tissue in the bin and grabbed some more and put them in my pocket. "Thank you. I will be fine. I will just have to learn to do my work."

"Yes you will. Now get off to class."

The bell started ringing. It was lunch time.

"I will have lunch first. It's half past one. I will go to class after lunch."

"Ok. I will see you into a group now."

"No. I will be fine. I have been at a table of people through this year and I will see if they will be my new friends."

"Ok."

I ran off and found the group I have been hanging out with. I put my bag on the seat and Sally notices I'm sad.

"Are you ok Phill?" Sally asks.

"Besides I failed year ten and now I got to repeat, I'm fine", I said.

"Oh. I'm sorry. You can be friends with us. You can hang around us."

I cringed at the word friends. I never had a real friend ever. I don't want to let them know that.

"Ok. I will hang out. I would love to be friends," I say feeling weird saying the word friends.
