I just got back the autopsy report which showed that Mr. Berkley was poisoned. His only living relative that I could pass on the news to was a young man by the name of Chase Berkley who our records show lives in New Hampshire. Now I knew this couldn't just be a coincidence this was fated to happen and I'm never one to turn my back when fate comes a knocking.
First step go to the hospital and check on Chase and gently break the news about his uncles passing. This was just gonna be one of those weeks I thought shaking my head and grabbing my coat and umbrella. It's been raining all day and it didn't look like it was gonna let up anytime soon.
I parked my car outside the hospital and headed upstairs to room 213 where they told me Chase was staying. I pushed open his door and walked in. The kid looked pretty pail from all the blood loss not to mention all the pain he must be feeling even with all the drugs their pumping into his system. His shoulder was heavily bandaged over where he got shot all in all he looked okay even though he was pretty loopy.
"Hey kid how you feeling?" I asked after all if i wanted some answers you had to be nice right? He shifted in his bed trying to get a better look at me. "I'm Detective Crawford. I'm the one that found you in that alley."
Recognition sparked in his eyes before he nodded slowly and croaked out," Yea thanks for that."
I nodded once then got straight to the point," So Chase I really came to talk to you about a man named Joshua Berkley. Does they name sound familiar in any way?"
He smiled sadly," Yea that's my uncle J what about him?"
"i'm sorry to tell you this but he passed about two days ago. We found him in an alley as of yet where not sure who did it but tests show that he was poisoned and left for dead." As I spoke his face grew paler and paler then started to turn green and he looked like he was gonna be sick. I stepped back worried "Do you need me to get the nurse? Are you feeling any pain? Chase?"
He sat back and his face cleared a bit, " No I'll be fine" he said in a much stronger voice. "I just can't believe Uncle J is gone he flew me out here for a visit and nobody even told me this had happened. Not even Aunt Evie." He shook his head sadly tears leaking out.
I stared at him stunned."Aunt Evie I asked?"
"Yea Uncle J's latest wife." He looked at me like I was stupid. I wasn't but hey this was news to me nobody even knew he was married.
"When did this happen? And do you have a way of reaching her?" I asked taking out a notebook to jot down the information.
"Yea, her name is Eveline umm Berkley I guess as of now, but she goes by Evie. Her cell is 593-828-5569. She works at Berkley's bank she worked with my uncle as his partner for the last few months before they where married. Now that I think of it she pretty much owns the company now doesn't she? Funny she always said she hated that Uncle J worked so much but she works just as hard as he does if not more.
"Really? Have you talked to anyone since you've been in here? Your parents? Friends? How about your aunt? I asked better safe than sorry.
"Yea my parents there flying in tonight to come see me, well my mom is my dads no longer with us", he said as a tear rolled down his face.
"My condolances", I said meaning it this kid just couldn't catch a break.
"Yea...."
"Oh good your up!" said a nurse walking in with a bright chipper smile. "Hows the pain? Is to too much we can up your dosage of pain killers if you need it." she said fussing over Chase.
I waited till he looked at me again before saying,"Well I better get going I just wanted to check to see if you where okay."
"Okay, thanks." He said with the first genuine smile I had seen on his face the whole time I stood there.I nodded once before turning around and heading out the door. Now to find this Aunt Evie of his hmm I wonder why she never showed up in our records.
