I woke up to the sound of clambering metal. I missed the sound of birds outside my window and the grass dancing in the wind. Not today nevermore.
"Training starts today! Be dressed and outside in two minutes!" Four snaps.
I take the handkerchief out of my pocket and place it under my pillow. I also hide my mom's sweater in my pillowcase. I put my new comfy, form-fitting, dauntless uniform. I loved the colors on me!
We walked into a training room, burning our old clothes on the way there. The tattooed man in standing in the huge training center.
"Hello my name is Eric, I am your mentor. This is Four he is also a mentor. Today we are going to train to fight for an hour and then we are going to start the fighting. Good luck!"
I ran straight to the punching bags and started using what I knew as standard fighting skills. We were taught to defend ourselves in Amity since we were the closest to the other side of the fence.
I hit it over and over. The poor bag was swinging back and forth like a rag doll. Some people stopped and began staring.
I heard Eric come up behind me and he grabbed my shoulder.
"Your up first tall kid!" He pulled me back and pushed me to a raised platform.
"Rules are: You fight until one of you cannot go on." He explained.
I walked up the stone stairs to the ring. In front of me was a muscular guy with a buzz cut. The little hair he had left was rusty orange. I got into fighting stance. The redhead made the first move and stepped towards me. I kicked his foot out from under him and punched him in the face as he went down. He hit the floor hard and groaned. Obviously angry.
"Bitch!"
He grabbed one of my feet with both hands. I knew what he was going to do so I slammed my other foot down his head. He pulled me to the ground and stood up . His fist went right to my gut as he held me by the collar. I propelled myself using my feet and kicked him in the stomach. He dropped me and took a few steps back. He rammed into me hitting me over and over with weak, but painful blows. Then he threw a swift uppercut to my chin causing my vision to blur. I landed on the ground and regained my vision to see him coming at me I dove under him and stood up swiftly. I kicked him in the groin and then punched his throat twice. He doubled over in pain and I kicked his legs out from under him. He slammed into the ground. This was the end and I was winning. I finished him off with a nice kick to the forehead.
Cheers rose all around me. The skinny little tree just brought down the giant.
"Short-stuff wins!" Four announces winking at me.
My nickname was Short-stuff?
How ironic.
Chris, Tris, and Al all embraced me at the bottom.
"Emmy is our little winner here!"
"Nice job Ana!"
"How did you do that Ana?"
Questions and compliments poured out of their mouths. I wasn't going to answer. I nearly killed the kid. Almost.
What is this? Is it human?
"Tris you're up!" Four said.
I patted Tris's shoulder as she walked up to the platform. A girl much bigger and stronger than her was up there waiting for her. Crap!
Tris got thrown around like she was a plush toy given to a Rottweiler.
She was knocked out in a matter of seconds that felt like hours of slamming and punching.
"Tris!" I cried out.
Eric gave me a dirty look and Four looked concerned. Tris was out cold. We rushed her to the medical room. She woke up after like a half an hour.
"Are you okay?" Chris asked.
Tris nodded, "Yeah I'm fine. Just totally got beat up. How was my score?"
Chris and I looked at each other. Tris got an awful ranking.
"Below." I muttered.
Tris rolled her eyes and we sympathized with her.
"Those stupid ratings won't last long." I told her.
"What places did you guys get?" Tris asked me.
Christina looked away, she got second. I got first, I must've really impressed them.
"Guys?"
"Second." Christina uttered.
Tris stared at me with an accusing look.
"First."
"and me?" She pondered.
"Last."
Tris swore under her breath and pounded her fists into the cot.
This wasn't fair
The next day, we headed down to the riflery range and I got to be next to Tris. She was having some trouble hitting the target. I hit it's head whenever I aimed at the chest. It was so aggravating!! ugh!
I taught Tris to use the small bump at the top to aim her shot and she hit the target on the first try. She grinned at me and kept firing shot after shot with my method until she got a shot in the heart. I got one really close to the heart, but I can always try again tomorrow.
Then came knives, I have been trained with knives because we work in the fields we use knives all the time. I am used to the silvery look and the smooth feel. I take a deep breath and make a swift throw to the target. I hit the heart. Eric looks at me in surprise and I shift under his gaze. He makes me uncomfortable. I just do not trust him.
"Go get it!" Eric shouted.
Al panicked.
"STOP!" Eric shouted at us. We froze and looked at him.
"Go stand in front of the target!" He snapped.
My stomach churned as Al stood in front of the target. A knife barely grazed his shirt.
"Stop it! Stop it! This is not fair! You can't great his bravery by throwing knives at him! Anyone would flinch!" Tris screeched.
"Then you stand in front of the target in his place." Eric smirked.
Four began throwing again. He hit kinda far from her, but then the throws got faster and closer to her. One landed just above her head and I shrieked.
"Tris!"
"Stop it! Stop it!"
They stopped and stared at me. I felt sick.
Christina held me back as a knife grazed Tris's ear. Eric stopped Four and Tris ran after them angrily.
"Idiots!" I growled at the trainers. I was royalty to them because of my scores. Eric thought so anyway.
"Little lady come back here!" Eric snapped.
"What are you going to throw knives at me?" I challenged.
"No! I'm warning you. You will have a high ranking job once you're out of here. You are my top student! You are their example! You can't have those outbreaks. Not like Tris! She is not going anywhere you are." He sat down and started adding up scores.
"I'm not just a shiny new toy you can just show off! I am a human being!"
"An extremely talented one." He mumbled.
"I don't want to be! I want to be normal! I want a normal job!" I say angrily.
"We will discuss this again later on Little miss."
"but-"
"leave!"
