It was Saturday at noon when I was directed to a nice lobby. I was left alone there for five minutes when two more people entered the room. The adult left, and I jumped for joy when I saw the red-headed girl across from me.
"Sara!" I screamed and ran over to her and hugged her.
"Erin!" She started crying.
We broke apart as Jake was brought in. We ran to him and had a group hug. He and I both had tears in our eyes now and Sara was still crying in joy. Another few minutes later, Haden was brought in. We had another group hug. Even Haden had tears in his eyes.
"Did you get offered the surgery to make you more human?" I asked the guys after a moment.
"Yeah!" They both said at once. All of our voices were strong and clear.
Sara gave us a confused look, so I explained.
"Woah." Was her reaction.
"Yeah."
We all sat down in our normal circle on the floor. We didn't want to break the tradition by sitting in chairs.
"Sooo." Haden broke the silence.
"Sooo." Sara mimicked him.
"Sooo." Jake and I added at the same time. We all started laughing.
"What now? What is going to happen to us?" Jake asked.
"Well, Hannah told me that if the three of us become more human by getting human organs, we will be a new experiment." I informed them.
" I wonder if they will send all of us to my town." Sara spoke her thoughts.
We all nodded in agreement, as normal.
"They put a brain scanner in my while I was out." Sara admitted.
"They did?!" Haden was very surprised.
"Yeah. I was told by Caden that they wanted to watch me function with all of this new knowledge."
Suddenly Jack walked into the room. He gave us all a greeting nod. Three of us nodded back while Haden said, "Hello!"
"So, we have decided that we would like to improve your current organs to make them able to survive in the outside world. The three of you rohms will be turned off for a bit while we do the changes. You will be the exact same person as who you currently are. All we will do is give you a human-like stomach and digesting system. You will then mostly fit in with the outside world. I'm sure Sara can teach you how to take care of your stomachs." He looked over at Sara. "Hannah, Caden, and I will teach them everything else they need to know."
We all seemed really scared. When he left, Sara gave us a lecture on not eating too much or too little and on what was good and bad to eat. At sunset, we were all taken to our separate rooms. In the morning, Hanna came in and clicked a button on a machine that was hooked up to my arm. I felt a dull shock and then everything went dark and silent and I was once again no longer aware.
I woke up at sunset. My insides hurt. Hannah walked in two minutes later.
"We gave you more human-like nerves too. You also will now be pumping blood along with energy. We didn't want to throw you into a whole new cycle, so that's why we left it half energy and made it half blood. Now, if you get cut, you will bleed and heal. If you run low on energy, you will not shut down. If you run low on blood, you will not shut down."
She talked on and on about how I would need to act in the outside world and how I would be functioning from now on. She also explained to me that they told my parents what happened and they understood. They were not told that they were robots. They were just told that we would not be back for a long time, if ever. They were told that we were going to learn to live in other societies.
In the morning, I got to see all of my friends again.
Sara was already in the lobby when I walked in. We greeted each other and then Jake came in. He looked really awkward. He walked up to us and stood about a foot farther away than normal.
Sara started laughing.
"Huh?" I asked her. She gave me a look that I immediately understood. We were all told separately last night that we would now be using toilets. So, like normal people would, we felt awkward.
"Anyway..." Sara said to stop both of our trains of thought. She looked like she was starting to feel awkward too. Then Haden walked in and saw all of our expression and he stopped.
"You..." He started to say.
"Stop, please." Jake was blushing embarrassedly.
Sara was laughing again.
We all gave her the "what" look this time.
"You guys are acting like humans now. It's so funny to watch! Let's get away from this topic now though, it's an awkward one."
We all agreed to move on.
"So, excited to go home?" I asked Sara.
"Yes! But, I'm scared of what my parents will say."
"I know I'm scared to just start a new, strange life!" Haden added. Jake and I nodded.
"This was a really weird yet cool experience. I'm glad I met you guys. And I'm even happier that we all can stay together! But, I'm not sure where you all will live. I am in a two bedroom house. I guess we could get another bed and you could move in, Erin, but I don't know where you guys will go, Jake and Haden."
"Maybe you could move into a three bedroom?" Haden spoke his idea.
"Yeah. Oh! We do have a storage room that we don't use! We could put carpet in it and get two more beds and that's where you guys could stay!"
"Yeah!" Jake and Haden both cheered.
"We could all be siblings!"
"What are siblings?" I piped in.
"Children in the same family. They can be adopted or born into the same family."
"Ooh! All of us are in class 'H', and your last name starts with 'H'! We could just change our last names like we changed our first!"
"Well, maybe, or you could make up your own last names!"
"Yeah!"
"I want to be Haden Hythe!"
"I want to be Jake... uh..."
"How about Jake Heyston?" Haden suggested.
"Yeah!"
"I'll be Erin Harper! Is Harper a word?"
"Yeah, it's a girls name."
"Cool! Now we all have identities!" I cheered.
"We need middle names." Jake suddenly added.
"I'll make them!" Sara volunteered.
"Sure!" I told her. We didn't know what good ones would be.
"How about, Erin Elizabeth Harper, Jake Allen Heyston, and Haden George Hythe?"
"Yeah!" We all agreed to our new names.
Soon it was lunch time. It was so great getting to taste new foods and eat just a little more than normal!
