Merrin sat alone in her apartment staring at the sky through the glass window towards the other end of her apartment. It was her birthday, but no one said "Happy Birthday!" to her or stopped by. She didn't have many friends. In fact, she didn't have any at all. Cupcakes were baking in the oven for her. She looked over at the oven to see the minutes displayed in the middle.

"5 minutes left." She thought.

As those five minutes past she began to think about her life and how she wanted it to change. She wished she had friends. She wished she had a better job than her waitress one. Everything needed to become better for her. She got up off the floor to check her cupcakes. As she opened the oven, smoke made its way into her face. She made herself cough then waved her arms to get the smoke away from that area before taking the cupcakes out. Burnt.

"Great!" Merrin said out loud with an annoyed tone.

She shut the oven off and took each cupcake out of the tin. One by one she put them onto a glass plate that had rose designs on the rim of it. She coughed again then realized one cupcake wasn't burnt.

"How can this be?" She blinked then put it on a separate plate. A smile appeared on her face as she grabbed a candle from the draw next to the fridge. She set the gray and white candle down on the plate next to her cupcake. The frosting was in the fridge so she grabbed that and started coating the top of the cupcake with white frosting. Vanilla cupcake with white frosting. Merrin then placed the candle in the center of the cupcake and lit it. She closed her eyes then made a wish before she blew her candle out.

The apartment door bursts open and a young male rushes into the apartment with a cell phone. "Oh my gosh! I am sorry. I didn't really mean to scare you." He said as Merrin jumped.

"Who are you?" She asked as she walked further away from him.

"It smelt like something was burning and I didn't know if anyone lived here so I was confused. Again, I am sorry." He turned to walk away, but then he added while looking at her. "I'm Joey. I live across the hall." A smile appeared on his face when he looked at her. He shut the door behind him when he left. She smiled big when she pictured his smile.

"Did my wish just come true?" She thought.
