My dearest readers,
First off, I want to thank all of you for putting up with this story from the start. From the beginning, I had no idea what I would write. It was terrifying, putting out a story and not knowing whether people would hate it or like it. But you all constantly showed support, without asking for anything in return. It warms my heart to know there are people like this in the world.
I'm sorry to say that I will not be active on Wattpad much in the coming months.
There are so many chapters waiting to be published, and so much that I hope to finish for this book and the two other books. I just can't publish them now.
Since you took the time to read up to here, I suppose you all deserve an explanation.
You see, when I was in third grade, five years ago, my mother developed breast cancer.
I was young and naive at that point, I didn't really understand what cancer was. It was a long time ago, yet to this day my mother's hair has thinned considerably, and she still takes medication every day. Appointments to the hospital have to be booked regularly to test if it comes back, and to this day my father's hair is silver from those countless months of worrying.
Now, my grandparents live in Hangzhou, a city in China. They have not been put in a retirement home, but I'm beginning to think that not putting them in a home was a mistake.
My grandfather has been ailing for a year now. The last time I saw him, through my phone screen on WeChat (a messaging app), he was wearing a mask to help him breathe, similar to the mask that Kaneki Ken wears in the anime "Tokyo Ghoul". He's bedridden, and needs help for basic things like going to the washroom. My grandmother constantly cleans, cooks, and looks after him, even though she is growing old herself.
Due to the high competition in China, every student is studying for a chance at a decent future. My older cousin (English name Betty) is one of them. She must be 16 now, the last time I saw her was three years ago. Even then, she never played with me and always studied, since she was a shy person and always seemed to have homework to do. Because of this, she is unable to look after my grandfather. Both my uncles and aunts have to work, since my older uncle is a doctor and my younger uncle is the owner of a technology company. My younger cousin's English name is Lucy. She's still in school, and only ten years old. She can barely reach the countertop, much less cook. I can't ask her to take care of my grandfather, she still has her exams to study for. She, currently in 5th grade, is studying what grade 8 students here study, and she has many extracurriculars on top of that. She's busy enough.
Which leaves my grandparents to fend for themselves.
Two days ago, I received news from my uncle: my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Breast cancer can be hereditary, and judging from the fact that both my mother and grandmother (both on the same side) had it, and also the fact that my aunt on my father's side had it, the chances of breast cancer in me and my siblings have greatly increased. What's more, during my grandmother's absence due to surgery I may have to go to China to take care of them. Being the second-eldest in all the children on my mother's side, and the only one that is "free", the responsibility falls to me to take care of my grandfather, and possibly my grandmother too.
Their cooking appliances are different than ours. They manually scrub the floors, and do everything by hand. I have roughly two months to master my Chinese (I am only semi-fluent), learn to cook, and learn China's culture, which is majorly different than Canada's.
Due to this, I will not be updating as much, or even at all, if I cannot find the time.
I know I sound whiny and self-pitying, but I simply want to state the truth to you. Please do not pity me, this is how my life will go and I will gladly bear the burden and serve my grandparents as best as I can.
While I'm gone, please do check out the works of other authors, there are so many books out there that are waiting to be discovered.
I don't mind if you want to complain to me XD
I deserve it for not updating more in the past few months, aye?
Once again, I truly am sorry, and I'm so grateful for you who took the time to read this note.
I'll be back, don't you worry. Once this is all sorted out, I'll try to post as often as I can.
Your friend,
-Ace <3
