The Letter

The man sneered at the name written in the return address. He laughed, with bitterness and bottled up pain as he tore open the letter, written in an all too familiar feminine hand. What did she want to say to him after 33 years? Did she finally realize that she was the one to blame for the break in their marriage? Has she written to apologize? But when his eyes slowly began to scan the words, the sneer and bitterness slowly melted away. Replacing all that he felt before was a profound sadness. His face became distorted and twisted as he slowly crumpled to the ground. His shoulders shook in a silent cry. He felt as if someone had sucker punched him in the stomach, as he doubled over and every breath caused him excruciating physical pain. If someone had watched from the side, they would have guessed just what that letter said, the dark and gloomy news casting a shadow, blocking out the light of the sun. A letter carried by a black crow, as the sky began to weep and shout. It, too, could not believe the terrible news the letter contained. But hadn't it witnessed her spirit, leaving the world?
