A Savage Novel ~ Book One

They've been around since I was at least six years old. I suppose they've always been here, actually. Always skulking, always lurking in the shadows like the beasts they are.

My first reliable memory of this disaster was my kindergarten year. My preschool experience had been unmarked by any oddity except for the very last semester when half my class, and school thereof, disappeared. No one spoke of the phenomenon, but it stuck in my young mind. A seemingly unremarkable summer passed in my youthful haze, not acknowledging the Cold War that was in process. After all, what's a six year old to remember about politics?

Kindergarten was a living hell, however. The previously missing kids were awarded seats in the front of the classroom; myself and the rest of my peers were stuck in the back to be ignored or reprimanded. Weekly assemblies were held to explain what changes would be made to our education. Always proceeded by a robotic voice assuring us that all this madness was for our safety.

After all, what lamb wouldn't be safe in a den of wolves?
