"Why do I keep coming in to look at this stuff?" Dr. Fitzgerald asked himself as he put on his lab coat and goggles.
"I ask myself the same thing." Dr. Cameron walked in next to him, gear already on, apparently ready for a fortieth day of research.
"You would think after forty straight days of staring at these... things... we would know more than a species name by now."
"You would think that, and so would I."
Fitzgerald and Cameron were the only two scientists in the room that day, everybody else either quit or moved to a different department. They went over to their computers where viruses galore lay waiting to be clicked on. I scoffed as I watched them through the screen of the security cameras. "After taking pictures of those things they will never get rid of those viruses, not even with the best hacker or computer programmer." I've been watching Fitzgerald, Cameron, and many other scientists work on this project for many days now, it fascinated me. Being a security guard has it's benefits, but also downsides, since I wanted to study these things myself but would never get the chance to put on the coat. Day by day, I watched the staff dwindle down from twelve to two. Something about this odd discovery either freaked everyone out and forced them to quit, or ask to be moved.
"Cameron come over here I found something." Fitzgerald was looking extensively at the female now, I don't know what they're called because that information is apparently top secret and submitted immediately to the Government. I don't understand why, really, because what would they do with the information...
"What is it?" Cameron walked over and looked at the species with Fitzgerald.
"Do you see that?"
Because Cameron was on the right, I saw his facial expression as he looked back at Fitzgerald. I started paying more attention because finally, after many weeks of really nothing, as far as I was aware, they discovered something. Cameron tripped over the tubes of the tank they were kept in as he stumbled to the computer to quickly type some notes. I leaned closer to the screen, like that would do much. Fitzgerald ran to the computer, tripping over a different tube while staring intensely at the computer.
"NO NO NO," Fitzgerald pointed at the screen. "This should go here instead of here, and this should be right there... there you go." As they were facing the screen, one of the female "things" silently flew out of the cage and towards the camera. It seemed to stare directly at it... but it didn't have eyes. It had these... teeth... teeth that were the sharpest, most intimidating things I've ever looked at.
In its language, I'm assuming, I heard it speak into the microphone. "There's no good intentions. Leave now, leave now, leave now." Terrified, I almost knocked over my coffee and unplugged everything as I jumped out of my chair and onto the ground.
"WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK!" I screamed as I crawled on my hands and knees and steadied myself onto the desk with controls. It was gone now, I didn't know where it was. Before I could do anything, my head flooded with so many cliche questions, but honestly, who wouldn't ask these things. As I was thinking of these questions, which included, 'What the fuck was that? Why do I understand it? HOW CAN IT TALK?', I was writing down what it said to me in my notepad which, conveniently, had never been used up until now. A loud noise suddenly came from the research room, as Fitzgerald starting screaming.
"SHIT, SHIT, SHIT! Cameron, the tubes! We tripped over and unplugged the tubes!" He struggled to plug them back in, as the "things" still flew around inside.
"Fuck... did any of them escape?" Cameron ran over, tripping over the computer, turning it off and losing the unsaved notes.
"I don't think so, I counted all of them. They all seem to be there."
Something started moving on the hallway camera that caught my attention. The "thing" was flying down the hallway towards the greenery room. I watched, wide eyed, as it flew, going from camera view to camera view as it made its way towards the open door. I was thinking to myself 'Aren't there scientists working right now or do they have the day off today?' As I was thinking about this, the "thing" made it into the room, and looking around, it seemed like, it went to a button. From what I could see from these shitty cameras, there was a bio-hazard logo on it. My eyes widened as it pressed the button, and flew out of the room.
"WHAT HAPPENED TO THE NOTES CAMERON!" Fitzgerald rushed back to the computer with his hands over his head in disappointment. "Did you save the notes?!"
"Oh my fucking God, what a day. I forgot to save the notes!" Cameron turned around, remaining at the tank.
I watched from camera to camera, trying to see what happened. In the greenery room, it was completely green, the room filling up with green smoke. It was like everything I'd seen in horror movies. Shocked, I grabbed my notepad, pen, and keys, and rushed out of the room. I wasn't supposed to leave my post unless my shift was over or there was an emergency. Because I only work the security cameras and I don't go anywhere else in the building but that room, I had no idea where the research room was. Once I found it, I was heaving. I had done about three laps around the entire building, which is pretty huge might I add, and pounded on the door. Through the window, I saw Fitzgerald and Cameron look up from their computer to see my face, sweaty, light, and horrified through the door window. Fitzgerald ran over and unlocked the door, letting me in.
Still wheezing, I mustered out to them, "One of your "THINGS" escaped through the open hole of the tube, made it's way to the greenery room, and pressed the bio-hazard button."
As I told them this, they kept looking from me to the tank, and then back at me, and so on. Fitz's eyes got wider and wider, as he realized the situation. "Slow down, slow down," he quickly explained, as he struggled to get the words out. "Cameron... one of them is gone... and it caused a chemical leak." He turned and faced the both of us. "I don't know how many other people are in the building but we need to leave NOW."
As he says this, all three of us ran out of the room, Cameron pressing the "emergency" button as we left the room. We ran down the hallway towards the exit where the other researchers met us. Before exiting, we all stared at each other, out of breath, as I said, "Let them two explain it." as my head pointed towards Fitzgerald and Cameron as I tossed my ass out the door of the facility, everyone else following behind.
One of the researchers belted, "We all can't make it out in our own cars, come to mine it has eight seats." We followed her into her SUV and struggled to put on our seat belts and hauled ass out of there. We weren't even out of the parking lot before we heard the loudest hissing we'd ever heard. Everyone was still struggling to get belts on. Cameron's was twisted around like crazy, I was apparently sitting on a lemon and another researcher was trying not to panic. The last thing any of us really remember is and explosion as the SUV was hurled towards the median with cars heading at us at fifty miles per hour.
