Beyond The Willow Tree

Chapter 5: Wings

When Willow awoke the next day she was in a place she didn't recognize. Very little light illuminated the room. There was just enough light for her to get a good look around. The walls were a very natural wood color. The ceiling was flat circle that had a spiral pattern. Willow looked in front of her and found there was an entrance, covered in vines. The light was coming in from there. She sat up, using her hands to support her. To her surprise, what she was touching wasn't flooring but soil. It was like she was inside a tree. Willow looked around the floor, noticing roots on the bottoms of the walls. It was a tree; she was staying inside a tree.

Willow tried to stand, but every muscle in her body screamed. She winced in pain, but continued to try and stand. Her struggles were futile. She collapsed back down on to the blankets that created a cushion for her to fall on. At the sound of her collapse, someone from outside the hut ran inside. Willow couldn't believe her eyes. This person had wings on their back. "W-who are you?" Willow asked, afraid of what the answer may be.

The person just giggled. "My name is Winnie." The girl said excitedly. She appeared very young, maybe 12 or 13. Her hair was long, wavy, and black. Her bangs were pulled to the side with a pink rose hair clip. Poking out from her hair was a pair of black antennas. She was wearing a yellow and black spaghetti strap top with a yellow knee length skirt. It was tied with a black bow that made it look like a dress. Sprouting from her back was a pair of wings, resembling that of a bumble bee. She was wearing yellow and black striped stockings that were met by a pair of black lift shoes.

Willow was in complete shock. She was trying to process why the girl in front of her had a pair of wings. Winnie noticed Willow staring at her wings and giggled. "I bet you've never seen a fairy before?" she said with a smile. Willow shook her head no. "I see. That's not uncommon now days. Humans forgot about fairies a looonnnggg time ago." She said happily. Willow still looked confused. "You still don't understand do you?" she said with a sigh. "I am a fairy. You're in Kaydo, the town of fairies, and I am a Bumble Bee fairy." Winnie explained. Willow was taken aback. She knew this world would have unusual inhabitants but she didn't think she would ever meet one.

When Willow tried to get up again, Winnie urged her to stay. "Stay put and I will get you some food and water. When we found you outside our town you were dehydrated. That man you were pulling on the sled was dying of poison." Winnie informed. She stood to leave. The memories of the day before filled Willow's mind. One memory in particular, the memory of the man on the sled.

"Winnie... that man... I was with... where is he? Did he live?" Willow asked the fairy before she left the tree hut. Winnie turned back to look at Willow, smiled, and without answering her question, left. Willow's heart sank. She had to find out the fate of the man.

A new found strength surged through her body. She fought her aching muscles as she tried to stand. She stood up still a little wobbly and started to walk to the entrance. Every step she took pained her but she kept pressing on. She had felt this man's pains for days. She almost felt connected to him. She had to know. Willow made it to the door and moved the vines from her way in order to exit. She found herself in a small, bustling town. Around her were thousands of tree huts not much different than the one she awoke in. The villagers all had wings on their back. After looking at them further, she realized not a single one had a matching pair. There were some with four wings and some with two. Some had spots and some had stripes. All were fairies. It took Willow a moment to continue on her quest to find out the fate of the man she had tried to heal.
