The door to Mrs MacRath’s office flew open and a boy with sandy coloured hair ran in. Vivenne stood immediately. “Another one, Vi. He’s been standing there and not trying to cross yet but will try” said the boy, quite out of breath.
“Thanks Jacob. I’m just coming” The boy nodded and ran out again.
Vivenne turned and looked at Lynsey. “She can go as far as the forest edge” said Mrs MacRath sharply. Vivenne stood and looked at her. “Of course Mrs McRath, Lynsey come with me”.
She ran out the room and Lynsey followed as fast as she could. When they reached the north-east of the woods, Vivenne stopped. “I can’t take you any further” she called. ”Wait until someone takes you back inside”.
Lynsey watched as the girl disappeared into the forest.
As soon as Vivenne arrived she could see what the problem was for the man. He could not cross the deep cut in the ground along the North border. She strode past the pack and went straight to the front.
“What are you doing here?”
The man’s deep voice growled back: “I heard that another Hunt has arrived at the school. May I see it?”
“The child is not among us and I think I would know if another from my clan arrived here”
Meanwhile, Lynsey was sitting around being bored. Then a thought came to her head. Why should I obey that girl or some head? I never did at those past schools. She stood up and ran faster than she ever had before. Suddenly, she saw the other children all standing there. She ran towards them. She ran right to the front and noticed every head had turned towards her. She gave a cocky grin to Vivenne who just stared in horror at her.
A man on the other side of a crevice looked at her and smiled.
“I think I have found what I was after” the man snarled. He jumped over the crevice in a single leap, but before he hit the other side he was a black wolf.
“Scatter!” yelled Vivenne and drew a sword of silver with a wolf’s head at the handle of it. Every child made a dash and soon formed a circle around the wolf. Some had turned into wolves, but how was that possible? Some were still children but held swords, shields and knives.
Then Lynsey realised something. She was in the centre of the circle as well as the wolf. Then something weird happened. The wolf spoke to her in her head. “I am here to offer you to join my master and me and he has much more than these little poxy brats! Make your choice” Lynsey looked and replied to him but her mouth didn’t move at all. “I think I’d rather wake up from this dream now” The wolf snarled at her. “You will still come with me” He backed Lynsey up against a tree. Suddenly, Vivenne transformed into a wolf, but she was a light grey and white wolf and much more beautiful than any fashion model or in fact anything she had seen before. The only thing that wasn’t like a wolf was how her eyes were still a lovely hazel and not amber like real wolves.
Vivenne ran at an alarming rate towards them. The black wolf growled and leaped at the height of her face and towards Lynsey’s chest. She moved her head backwards and remembered no more.
*****
Lynsey’s eyes were blurry as her head was bathed in water. The person doing it did not seem to realise that she was awake.
