I've been walking toward my dad's office. I saw three guards keeping their cool despite the hot summer temperature.
"Hey," I called out to the tallest guy among the three. "Is Dad inside?"
"Yes, Miss Amelia, he's in there having a business meeting with some men online," he answered.
"Thank you," I replied, even though I didn't really mean it.
I knocked on my dad's office door. Knock, knock, knock. Then I opened the door and saw him talking on the phone. I didn't care who he was talking to. I walked over, sat on his lap, and placed the envelope containing my report card on his table. I felt his hand encircling my waist.
"Dad! Enough with the father-daughter bonding. Just check my card and be ready for my Lambo," I said, rolling my eyes playfully.
At that moment, I heard the click of the doorknob. I saw Mom enter the room, walking over and sitting on the edge of the table, raising both brows. Of course, I gave her the sweetest smile I knew.
"Mom! Do you need anything?" I asked.
I saw her clench her jaw slightly, but it faded quickly and was replaced with a sweet smile. "Of course, Gregoria Amelia Damienes Morgan Furokawa. Could you get out of your dad's lap now? For all I know, I'm the one who should sit there."
Pfft. I was really trying hard not to burst out laughing. Then, of course, I got off.
"Don't worry, Mom. You still own Dad. And by the way, I'll be patronizing our forest tonight."
"OK, just take care of yourself, Greg," Mom said.

I couldn't help but stifle a laugh at her playful tone. "Mom, you know this isn't what it looks like!" I said, trying to keep a straight face as I slid off my dad's lap.
"Really? Because it looks like you're trying to steal all my quality time with your father," she teased, arching an eyebrow.
"Steal? More like borrow," I shot back, smirking. "And besides, Dad has been busy with business calls. I'm just helping him relax."
Dad chuckled, putting down his phone. "Relaxation is important, especially with my two favorite girls around," he said, grinning at us.
"See, Dad gets it!" I declared, crossing my arms and nodding.
Mom shook her head, but I could see the affection in her eyes. "Just remember, I was here first. And now that you're done being a little monkey, what's going on with you, Greg?"
"Nothing much, just excited for the party tonight," I said, trying to sound casual. "You know, the usual high school chaos."
"Ah, the party. I heard he might be there," Mom said, her tone slightly teasing.
I groaned, rolling my eyes. "Ugh, don't remind me. He thinks he's the king of everything. It's exhausting!"
"Exhausting or exciting?" she pressed, a knowing smile on her face.
"Exciting in a headache-inducing kind of way," I admitted. "I'm just trying to keep my cool and not let him get under my skin."
"Good luck with that," Mom said, winking. "Just remember to have fun. And if things get too crazy, call me. I'll come get you."
"Thanks, Mom, but I can handle myself," I replied, a mix of confidence and trepidation in my voice.
"Just keep an eye out for your Lambo," she added with a smile, gesturing toward my dad's desk, where the envelope containing my report card lay. "And don't forget to show your dad what you earned. He's going to be proud."
"Yeah, I know," I said, glancing at the envelope. "I'll show him later. Right now, I need to mentally prepare for the evening."
"Don't worry, my Queen! I'll always follow your orders," Dad chimed in, a playful grin on his face.
"Just don't start calling me that in front of my friends!" I shot back, laughing as I left the office.
As I stepped back into the heat of summer, the anticipation for the party bubbled up again. I couldn't help but think about what the night would bring—especially with him around. Would I get a chance to show him that I could hold my own?
