"Run. Go to my room and lock the door. I don't care what you hear, stay inside. I'll come get you." My mother rushes me to her room and puts me in her closet.
"What's going on mom? Why do I have to hide?" I try to hold onto her hand as she tries to shuts the door to lock me inside. I'm scared of what's happening and what will happen to her.
"Just listen to me and stay here. I'll come back for you. I love you. Always remember that." With that said, she kisses my head and locks the bedroom door on the way out.
I hide myself amongst the clothes and try to listen for something to tell me what was going on. Nothing. That's all that I heard. It was never this quiet in the house. Never. I wait a few hours in the closet before my nerves get the best of me and I pick the lock to the closet. Everything had gone tense while I was in the closet as it was nice to stand. I pick the lock of the bedroom door and quietly move through the house. Everything looked the same until I got to the living room.
Everything was thrown across the floor and there was blood splattered on the nearby wall. I wanted to scream out, but nothing escaped my lips. I numbly place my hand in the blood on the wall. It was still warm and I follow it down the hall. In the kitchen, I find my mom laying in a growing puddle of blood. A man in dark clothes was standing above her and was laughing to himself.
"You should have known you couldn't hide from me forever. I promised I would come back. It's a shame it had to end this way though. You were one of my favorites." He clicked his tongue in shame while shaking his head from side to side.
He hadn't noticed me yet and I slowly back up the way I came. All I could do was stare at my mom on the floor and try not to make a sound. I grab her cell phone off the counter and lock myself in the closet. I call the police and whisper into the phone.
"Help me. Someone is in the house and my mom is hurt. Please. Hurry." I whisper. I could hear steps approaching in the hall and put the phone on the floor so it didn't look like I was on it. I try to hide myself as my heart races in my chest. I hoped the man couldn't hear it.
The door knob to the bedroom jiggles and goes quiet for a bit. I thought he had left but the next second, the door was kicked in. I try to hold in my gasp of surprise but he heard me and came towards the closet. My entire body starts to shake and a soft whimper escapes my lips.
The handle to the closet jiggles and I push myself back farther into the closet. I can see the shadows of feet pacing in front of the door. The handle jiggles again before whipping open.
I scream and the man laughs at my reaction. He grabs my shoulders and starts shaking me.
"Nick! Nick!" He screams in my face as he shakes my shoulders.
I open my eyes and see my room mate Evan right in my face.
"You were dreaming about it again, Nick. Probably woke up half the dorm already." He says and sits at the edge of my bed.
I groan softly and run a hand through my already messed up hair. Why did I always have this dream?
