Survival

Opening my eyes to what seemed like thousands of trees surrounding me; I was confused

and wondered where I was. I don't remember going on vacation and falling asleep on the plane. I

tapped my brother's forehead to wake him up he looked as confused as I was. Thayer and I

decided that we'd look around and try to figure out where the heck we are.

Based on our surroundings, tall green trees, the sound of running water, the leaves

crackling under rabbit's feet and the bright sun beating down on us, we figured we were in a

forest. For us being in a forest is very strange because we've never seen one, only in pictures and

videos. We were told that there was no more forest or jungles or anything beautiful left on this

planet. Ever since 2012 nothing has been growing "it's amazing that most people are still alive"

is what my science teacher says, but since America has gone futuristic it would be a shock if we

weren't.

Thayer and I are walking through the forest looking for food and shelter but instead we

are hearing all these amazing sounds. We love it but it seems endless, like that nothing exciting

is going to happen on this unknown adventure. Hearing something Thayer puts his arm out in

front of me telling me to be quiet and sit down behind a big rock with him.

Whispering softly I said "What do you hear?"

"I hear people chanting in a weird language, singing and music too." He said sounding

very sure of himself.

For a seven year old Thayer is very smart and he can hear things miles away.

"Well should we go and see what's going on, maybe the people down there could help us

out."

Since the sun was setting we decided to get some sleep and wait until tomorrow to see the

people, we didn't want to get lost in this strange forest at night. Thayer managed to fall asleep

right away. It took me a while to finally dose off; I heard birds talking, animals hunting and

branches breaking in this mysterious forest.

Waking up to what seemed like minutes later I saw that Thayer was gone, I jumped up

and started to panic, knowing that wouldn't help the situation I counted to 10 and calmed down. I

thought to myself

"Maybe he went to see the people before me, he's probably not far off, if leaving now

means I could catch up to him, then I will."

The scary part is not knowing when he left or if he even wanted to leave, what if

something or someone took him. Getting up to see smoke far off in the distance gave me some

reassurance, I knew the people were there. In order to get to them I had to make my way down a

very steep hill. I remember learning about dew in science so I assumed it was on the rocks and
