Castiel waited, and waited, and waited some more until nearly all hope was lost. then, out of the silence, a heavy metal door creaked. He sat up straight as Dean descended the stairs.
"I was beginning to think you wouldn't meet me," Cas said, his voice ridged with worry.
"I almost didn't," Dean said coldly. It felt like a pin prick into Cas' skin.
There was a silence the hung around the room, thick and uncomfortable.
"Does Sam-?"
"No. I'm not going to tell him unless I have to. Are you sure they're onto us?" Dean said quickly.
"Almost positive. Soon after Gabriel left Heaven, Micheal and Lucifer began arguing. They started killing off members: Uriel. Samandriel. They even killed Anna. I believe I'm next, then you. They wish for all evidence of the Heaven ever existing to be... disposed of," He spoke to Dean in a hushed tone, worried that someone might hear them despite their utter solitude.
Dean was quiet for a long time, considering this idea.
"We need to run," he said at last.
"When shall we-" Cas was interrupted by Dean's phone.
"Hold that thought," Dean held up a finger and looked at the screen.
Sam (Bitch) Winchester
"Hiya Sammy, I'm a little busy-"
"Shes gone-!" A voice gasped from the other line.
"Sam-who-"
The hyperventilated crying continued.
"Sam, calm down. What happened? Who's gone? Sam? Sam!"
"A fire.... Jess she.... She was in the apartment," Sam choked.
"Oh God." Dean breathed.
"What happened?" Cas demanded. Dean ignored him and focused on Sam.
"Where are you?" He said calmly.
"Police... Station... Campus," his voice was strained and breathy.
"I'll be there. Hang tight, okay?"
A sob erupted from the obviously distressed brother before the call ended. Dean shoved his phone in his pocket and started towards the door.
"Come on. We're going to Stanford."
----------------------------------------------
The car ride was awkward, to say the least. After Dean explained the situation, Cas sat pressed against the passenger side window while Dean drove. They didn't stop until the sun began to rise. When the duo arrived at the college, Dean parked and made his way to the Campus PD main office. He spotted his younger brother seated in a chair in a side room. He approached Sam, kneeling to his height.
"Hey, Sammy," he said quietly, rubbing Sam's back. Sam leaned into the touch, having exhausted all tears.
"It was like....like mom..." Sam murmured. Dean froze, as if this assured his superstitions.
"Come on, we gotta go home. Dad'll know what to do," Dean managed after a minute.
"I can't, Dean," Sam weakly pulled away. "You heard dad-"
"I don't care about what happened. We're going home," he decided he'd deal with his father when the moment called upon him.
The brothers stood, making their way towards the door. Once outside, Sam spotted a familiar figure.
"What's he doing here," he gestured to Cas.
"There's something going on," Dean answered for Cas, leading Sam to the car. Sam got shot gun and Cas rode in the back.
-----------------------------------------
They drove until the familiar old shack appeared.
"Dad?" Dean called once they all exited the car.
No reply.
"Dad?" Dean yelled louder, jogging to the door alone. He threw the door open only to find a note among the broken beer bottles.
I zeroed in on the killer.
I'm sure of it this time.
To Sam and dean:
Don't wait up.
Dean crumbled the paper and threw it down in frustration, storming out of the house.
"Is he in there?" Sam spoke up for the first time since Stanford.
Dean swallowed.
"Dad's missing."
