It was a cold day in the big apple, as per usual for the winter.
Everyone was bustling about, bundling their coats and hurrying their children. Nobody wanted to be stuck in the snow- it was unevitable, but yet so many tried to hide from it.
It was January Seventh. Still the dead of winter, but not as cheery as the month before. Christmas lights still hung from the buildings, their lazy owners not bothering to remove them. The occasional tree could be seen on the sidewalk, waiting for garbage day to pass and bring them to a Landfill.
There wasn't any snow on the ground today, unusual for New York. The sky was heavy with white clouds, however. Signs of snow. The big grey clouds were bulging, pregnant with frozen water droplets. Ready to release them unto the earth, painting it white.
The houses, the few houses that actually existed in New York, were ready for it. The children waited eagerly for the clouds to spill, new toys at the ready. The windows fogged up, and the fire roasting openly. Cliché, yes, but true.
One house, however, had a rather strange resident. He had moved here for college, and decided to stay after he graduated. He had gone to law school, and had was now an apprentice to one of the most successful lawyers in American history- Granz. How he had gotten to this point was quesionable; An intern lawyer getting connections to Granz was surely hard to come by.
Ulquiorra lived in a small flat, surronded on both sides by other flats. Those houses, however, had children and families. Ulquiorra lived alone and worked mostly from home. Thus, the small children in the area gave him the title, "Emo perv". Small children being, of course, wary of men that live alone.
None of that was true, you see- Ulquiorra was a busy man, unusually so for a Twenty-six year old. He worked in his home office almost seven hours a day, making business calls and writing case reports. He kept his curtains closed but his windows open, letting natural light filter in through the sides. He liked it that way, he could concentrate better.
He didn't mind the cold, really. He enjoyed it, even. It seemed fitting to him, biting at your nose and nipping your hands frozen. Ulquiorra was busy, today, and couldn't play in the cold. He had other things to do.
He was sitting at his desk, finishing a report for a nasty case- a divorce-turned-double-suicide. He quickly typed the last words, fingers flying across the black keys, and printed the document. He ran it through the fax machine so that Granz could fill it out.
The pale man obseved his dark office. He kept minimum light around him at all times, like a cave. He wasn't depressed, or emo... he just enjoyed the tranquillity of darkness. The occasional flap of light from outside. He walked out of his office, and made his way towards his small kitchenette.
He poured himself a cup of coffee, adding milk to cool it before sipping it slowly. He had received a call the day before, asking him to meet an old friend. This old friend of his, he had known since the last year of elementary school. He was the jock, the joker, the player- whatever you wanted to call a stuck-up popular kid. He had never paid any attention to him, in class, instead focusing on his studies.
