~ Akira's POV ~

"Jirachi is a very elusive Pokémon... it rarely reaches out and connects to anyone."

I fold my hands over my knees, ignoring the worried and curious glances of my mother and sister. "In the stories, it was described as a legendary who did care for the living beings on this planet, but due to... circumstances, it distanced itself away."

The two nod- a gesture that meant they understood, and wanted me to continue.

"Instead of being present directly," I say, "Jirachi left a gift for those who seek help in its stead. However, only the ones worthy enough and filled with compassion could be able to receive the gift."

"Then, what is it?" asks Ash, with the Pikachu bobbing its head in agreement. They look like two excited children, impatient for the rest of the story.

I'm getting to that, I want to snap at them, but then I remember I must be kind.

I stare at the table. "Jirachi once created an island haven for whoever needed refuge and shelter. On that island is a temple, and inside the temple is the gift."

"But what is the gift exactly?" Okay, dude, chill out for a second. I fail to hold back an exasperated breath, and the visitors become a bit sheepish.

"I'm not exactly sure myself, but its power is said to grant wishes. Any wish within reason, any wish that would fulfill a good purpose."

Their eyes immediately light up, and they high-five each other. "Then, all we gotta do is find that temple and get the item, right?!" shouts an ecstatic Ash.

I hold a hand up for him to stop. "Correct- however, it will not be that easy. There are several tests you need to take in order to get the item and be judged as a 'good' person with good intentions. Now, there's something I first need to see. Follow me outside."

Without checking to see if they consented, I stood up abruptly and strode out the house.

~ Ash's POV ~

Trailing her out through the front door, I notice the woman and little girl exchange concerned looks. I turn back to Akira and stuff my hands in my pockets, yawning and closing my eyes briefly to show indifference.

"Ninetales, Ice Beam!"

What?!

Ninetales can't use Ice Beam.

I jolt awake as she suddenly whirls, flinging a Pokéball out; with a flash of blinding white light, a blue and white fox Pokémon appears. It opens its jaws and expels the ice-type move.

"Pika!"

My partner jumps in front of me and uses Electro Ball, which holds off the Ice Beam and cancels both moves, resulting in a rolling wave of thick smoke.

Covering my eyes, my teeth clenched together, I wait until the smoke clears out. After I'm sure it dissipated, I uncover my eyes.
