--" Uhh have I seen you from somewhere?" I lifted my head in a bout of confusion. Was someone talking to me?
"I'm Faith... Faith Camden." Someone stood above me, a boy with an average build. He had a caramel brown skin tone, he was barrel-chested and his eyes we're a green color. The type of green you'd expect to see in the trees of a rainforest. "I actually asked if I've seen you before, I'm Lucas. But my friends call me Luke." He smiled, with his eyes closed. His voice was so inviting, it almost felt warm. I peered up as if I was waiting for the punchline to a joke. It was then I noticed he wore a uniform. A white jersey with green lettering and yellow seems. It became clear to me that he was waiting for a response. I opened my mouth prepared to say something anything, "I-I". Just then I felt something inbound it felt like it was coming fast..
I let out a loud shriek as if I were warning someone of an impending doom to befall them next and whoever else dared to breathe, the briskly fear that came over me wasn't as nearly as fast as the way he moved. It was a like burst of energy, in a swift motion his body moved as if it were defying gravity. His hands guided what seemed to be a quiet sphere of energy hurdled at us from behind us. A still silence overtook the cafeteria as I wrestled with something inside of me urging me not to scream once more. This time fear wouldn't be the cause. I heard a loud chuckle from across the room. Then another, in a moment the room was in a frenzy. Crowds of people altogether laughing at my terror. I wondered if this was a punishment for speaking to him. I was caught off guard again when I saw that he was cradling a basket-ball. I felt embarrassed. The second I realized I was never in any danger, the crowd roared with laughter. I felt both a gentle touch and a pull on both of my arms. Someone was pulling me towards a nearby exit, I felt an uneasy discomfort staring at the faces laughing at me. Distorted sounds that were bleeding together the closer we came toward the exit. I assumed it was Lucas. He gave me the impression that he had this hero syndrome.
The way he stood behind me as if he'd known me all his life as he caught the ball. Maybe in an effort to shield me from harm, I felt like a younger Lois Lane. I felt my cheeks burning, I just knew they were turning red. I lifted my gaze, only to realize that it wasn't Lucas at all. It was another boy, He quickly gave an introduction coupled with an apology. "I'm Diego, I'm so sorry! I threw the ball, I didn't expect you to see it, it was something I do all the time to keep Lucas' skills sharp." I'd heard enough, I hushed him. "You completely embarrassed me, how am I supposed to show my face again?" He started to stare at a point between my eyes, it started to feel like he'd completely lost interest in what seemed like a heart-felt apology.
I wanted to forgive him, I actually already had. I just wanted him to work for it a bit. I continued, "this is my first week and I already look like some schizo-freakazoid, who screams at any sign of panic." "Come on, he was apologizing." Muttered Lucas from behind me, I turned in an about face. I thought to myself, what is it with these people and the constant sneak attacks. My eyes were fixed on Lucas standing in front of me with a puzzled look on his face, it quickly turned into an uneasy glare. "At least give him a chance, before you write him off as an untrustworthy jerk!" Lucas hissed at me like a venomous snake. "Bu-but I-I." I tried to come up with an explanation. Lucas wasn't having any of it, I turned to Diego. He has this look in his eye, I'd seen it before. I couldn't exactly place it though.
I watched as the ball quickly sweep across the room again, into the hands of Diego. "Let's get out of here." Lucas growled. I stared quietly as they disappear, down a hallway past the green lockers leading to the football field. "I can't believe I did that. God who do I think I am?" I faced the wall, I wasn't sure if I was trying to tune out the rest of the world or giving myself a time out. I began to hear a shallow sobbing. It was clearly vying for attention and quickly got old. Simultaneously the insistent buzzing accompanied by a ringtone began. I tried my hardest to find my phone, but it was hidden within my bag. I already knew who the caller was. It was my mother. I know this because she chose this ringtone, this was a song she would always sing to me. She for some reason always wanted me to know that she was with me. I was wondering why she was calling. I finally freed the cell phone from the satchel on my backpack.
