Oli's POV
"Oh, come on!" shouted Hana, throwing her Wii remote to the ground. "How are you so good at this?" In frustration she turned off the machine. "I suck."
"Yes, you do," I agreed. I was visiting Hana, my half-sister, in America for a while since my band and I had just finished a tour. "I am the MarioKart champion!" I raised my arms in victory.
Hana laughed. "Maybe in England you are, but my friend Sarah could kick your sorry little butt. You should meet her sometime. I think you guys would get along. Actually," she began, her face brightening, "you can come to her 21st birthday party tonight!"
"A party, Hana? Not really my area. Besides, your friends all think I look, like, scary or something."
Hana pouted. "Please? She's my best friend! Plus, you'll be able to drink if you want. No minors will be there. She's the youngest of our friends."
"But, Hana, I don't want her mum to yell at me to leave like the last time one of your friends met me..." I trailed off. Once, when we were a bit younger, Hana had taken me to a friend's house with her. That friend's mother happened to think I was trouble and used a string of profanities indicating I was many things I am certainly not.
"For fuck's sake, Oli, live a little! You're 27 years old." Hana balled up her sweatshirt and threw it at me. "And I'm pretty sure no parents will be there." She gave me a wink as she walked up the stairs, and I sighed and trailed behind her in defeat.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Bloody hell, Hana, people are looking at me," I muttered, wishing I'd worn a long-sleeved shirt that showed of less of my many tattoos. "I should go."
"Oli, you haven't even met Sarah yet!" pouted my sister, dragging me alongside her. "Hey, Sare! Happy birthday!" she exclaimed, hugging the girl who was celebrating her birthday. I stood back a little. The girl, Sarah, was really pretty. She had long, dark hair that fell into her brown eyes as she stood shyly. I could see parts of a tattoo under several gold bangles. "Meet my brother, Oli," said Hana with a smirk. As soon as Sarah saw me, her eyes widened, and I was sure I was completely fucked, soon to be thrown out of the party.
"Oh, my God," whispered Sarah slowly, and I felt embarrassment creep up on me like shadows in the night. I expected her to make Hana take me home, but that didn't happen. "Oliver Scott Sykes is your brother? Why the hell haven't you told me this?" Her voice cracked a bit. Frankly, I thought it was adorable.
Hana was grinning. "I told you you'd have a great birthday."
Sarah suddenly looked embarrassed. "You must think I'm a crazy fangirl. I'm Sarah." I smiled and shook her hand.
"Great to meet you, Sarah. And no, I'd much rather you be a fan of me and my music than be scared," I chuckled, making her blush. "Would you like me to sing something? It is your birthday, after all. Do you have a favorite song by my band?"
Sarah bit her lower lip and I smiled. The happy expression on her face made me glad I'd agreed to come to the party. "Could you sing 'Can You Feel My Heart?'" she asked, her voice barely above an excited whisper.
"Of course I can, love. Your friends won't mind, right?" I asked, slightly nervous that I would embarrass this beautiful birthday girl.
"Nah, most of them listen to you guys too," Sarah answered. "I have a version that's just instrumental, I'll hook it up to the karaoke machine." She bounded onto the stage, the silver sparkles on the bodice of her strapless party dress glittering in the neon lights. She was one of the prettiest girls I'd ever met, even prettier than my friend Hannah, who fancied me so much it was beginning to drive us apart. I'd never seen Hannah as more than a friend; actually, I'd never really seen anyone I could imagine being with forever. Sarah was an exception.
My heart fluttered when our fingers touched as she handed me the microphone, a huge smile on her face. Stop it, Oli, I thought. She's supposed to be the fangirl, not you. I couldn't help but worry that I was going to disappoint her as I brought the microphone to my lips and the music began to play. "Can you hear the silence? Can you see the dark? Can you fix the broken? Can you feel, can you feel my heart?" Sarah and Hana had been right. No one looked scared in the least. They were all screaming and cheering, and the familiar feeling of being onstage with the newfound emotion I had for Sarah empowered me to sing with more passion than I think I ever have. The song finished and Sarah came back onto the stage, switching off the machine and giving me a huge grin.
"Thank you," she whispered in my ear, going up on tiptoe.
"Anytime, love," I responded. She giggled as I tried to nonchalantly brush my hand against hers.
"What exactly are you trying to do now, Oliver?" she quizzed me. My eyes widened and I mumbled an apology as we walked off the stage.
"It's fine. Oh, my gosh, Alice is finally here!" Sarah cried suddenly, running in the direction of a girl who had just walked in the doors. I heaved a sigh and walked over to a table which had an assortment of food and beverages. Grabbing and popping the top off of a Blue Moon beer, I sauntered to the propped-open door and looked at the full moon that hung brightly in the cloudless sky. I could see each and every one of my breaths in the frigid March air, and after a while my bare arms grew cold. As I turned to go back inside, I accidentally bumped into someone.
"Oh, God, I'm sorry!" Sarah said, staring down at the now-broken beer bottle. Fortunately, it had been empty when it had dropped. She bent to pick up the pieces, but I stopped her arm.
"It's okay, don't worry about it. And I don't want you to cut yourself on these pieces of glass." Now I could clearly see the tattoo on her wrist I had noticed earlier- it was the linked rings from the Sempiternal album cover. "Nice tattoo." I gave her a wink and she blushed.
"Thanks... Oh, and the party's finishing up, but Hana is gonna stay a while longer so, um, maybe you could too? I mean, if you want. I didn't mean to assume you cared or-"
Unable to help myself, I cut her off by leaning down and pressing a gentle kiss to her soft, sweet lips. Her eyes fluttered shut in surprise as she wrapped her left arm around my neck and went up on her toes, bringing our lips closer together. I closed my eyes as well and put my arms around her waist. Around us, people cheered and I twisted Sarah's long hair between my fingers.
"Sorry," I muttered as we broke apart, blushing furiously.
Sarah gave me a small smile. "It's okay. I kinda liked it. Maybe we could do it again sometime." Her confidence gave me a boost of my own.
"So do you wanna be my girlfriend?" I asked. Eyes lighting up, Sarah nodded and pulled me into another kiss.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Sarah?" I walked into the bathroom to find her sitting at the edge of the tub, eyes glazed with tears, staring at a white stick. Dread filled me as I walked up behind her. It was a pregnancy test, and it was positive.
"What am I gonna do, Oli? I have college, I have a job, I can't take care of a baby on my own!" She began to cry, silently, and I wiped the tears from her cheeks and sat down beside her.
"Hey," I said, rubbing circles on her back. "Who said you're gonna have to raise him on your own?"
Sarah looked up at me. "Well, I just assumed..."
I pulled Sarah on my lap so she was facing me. "I know we haven't even been together for a full year yet, but I love you Sarah, I do, and nothing- especially not our baby- can stop that." She began babbling but I cut her off by kissing her gently. The pregnancy test fell to the floor as her arms went around me and her fingers tangled in my hair. Lifting her up, I carried her to the living room without breaking the kiss and set her down on the couch.
"Well, Sare-bear," she giggled at the nickname I had given her, "the guys and I have been working on a song... for you. Would you like to come to practice and hear it?"
"Of course, Oli-bear," answered Sarah. "I can't believe you'd write me a song."
"Only the best for the love of my life," I replied, kissing her on the nose as we walked to the car.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"What's up, Sarah?" asked Matt Nicholls, giving her a high-five. "Oli, bro, you ready?" I was a little nervous Sarah wouldn't like the song, but I nodded.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm ready.
"All my life I searched for something I could never find. Love seemed like nothing but a waste of time. No use begging God in Heaven for something I swore was fake. But across the ocean I got the notion meeting her was fate. Can't deny perfection; everybody's begging for a taste. But too bad fuckers, it's my arms around her waist. Angel on Earth! Light among the dark! Can't explain perfection; there's nowhere to start! If I died her name would be the last breath on my lips. I fall again every time we kiss. Search any, everywhere but you'll never find another girl as fucking perfect as mine! There's no denying her perfection. She's an angel who fell from Heaven. The first glimpse of a nonexistent God, she's starting to change my mind about it all." As I finished up the song, I noticed a tear glide down Sarah's cheek, a smile on her lips.
"That was amazing, Oliver. I can't believe you'd write something for me." She looked down, but I tilted her head up so I could look into her eyes.
"I love you, more than anything. I promise I'll stay with you and help you take care of our baby. I'm glad you liked the song, too." Smirking, I pulled Sarah into a deep and loving kiss.
