Taylor composed herself, then started walking back towards the school. She thought no one had seen Gabby snub her. At least, she hoped so.
She was wrong.
One person did see.
It was a girl named Lily, a girl who was, in fact, one of Taylor's new classmates.
Lily had been in the same class as Gabby since kindergarten.
She and Gabby had been best friends in second grade.
Then, suddenly, they just....weren't.
Lily had seen Gabby shed a number of different friends over the years.
But now Lily had her own group of friends, true friends this time.
And Gabby had her own group of friends too.
Lily and Gabby hardly talked to each other now; their groups of friends hardly mingled either.
On the first day of school, Lily had been talking with her friends, when she noticed Taylor, a very tall and skinny but pretty girl, walk up to the school.
She had seen Taylor nervously glance around, as if she was looking for someone, and had then seen her relax and her face light up when she found who she was looking for.
Lily had watched as Taylor ran up to Gabby and her friends. She had seen Gabby's reaction (or rather, her lack of one).
She had seen everything.
She had thought of going up to Taylor, to say hello, maybe to cheer her up a little, but she didn't.
Lily had started to turn back to her friends, when she saw Taylor quickly walk away from the main courtyard, saw her hunched shoulders, saw her brush her hand over her face.
Then she felt guilty for not going over to her.
But then the bell rang, and Lily couldn't do anything except re-join her friends, and walk into school.
