PROLOGUE:
She was sweet,
She was strong,
She was hopeful and joyful,
She laughed and cried a lot,
She was Violet,
She was filled with life.
But all virtues vanquished that very night she lost her precious flower.
1952: Somewhere in New Jersey.
Time: 08:45 pmAnother cloudy night rolls in covering the last of twilight sky, as if the blackness failed to come fast enough. The rolling grey rapidly becomes as invisible as the stars it concealed, but the air still felt humid. The low sky imparts a claustrophobic tension and the only thing to do was seek shelter and sleep it out.
The living room was red and white themed, clutter-free featuring drapes, lighting and ample furniture. The living room was covered in floral patterns, bentwood furniture and décor. The flooring was linoleum, a corner with a chair set out for sewing and knitting. A typical home of the 1940s.
The air was suddenly rent by the sound of breaking glass, smashed into a thousand glittering fragments,‘’Are you trying to kill me?” Hannah screamed at Richard moving away from the broken beer bottle,
‘’You’re not listening to me’’ Richard said pulling her back his eyes boiling with range,
‘’What do you want from me?’’ Hannah cried out,
‘’I go out every day working to provide for our family and you sit home soaked in alcohol, yet you want me to stop working saying it’s your responsibility and not mine’’
‘’Oh yes it is’’ Richard replied,
‘’You’re not doing anything about it and I can’t sit home, we have two children for crying out loud’’
‘’Mom, dad’’
‘’Why are you guys fighting again?’’ seven year old Jamie asked holding his three year old sister Teddy who was in tears.
‘’Honey, can you guys please go back and play in your room’’
‘’Everything is going to be all right’’ Hannah assured as they both went back inside.
Their voices rose above the sacred silence Jamie and Teddy’s appearance had created, a glance, touch and more comments from Hannah stirred a hurricane of harsh and horsed insults. Not knowing what came over him, Richard lunched his hand slapping Hannah.
She wanted to cry as rage filled her belly. She felt her ears getting hot, she glared at him then spat out ‘’how dear you?’’, he sneers at her then laughed adding more fuel to her wrath.‘’You think this is funny?’’ she snapped, he glared at her with hatred in his cruel dull eyes,
‘’You are extremely stupid’’
Their heated quarrel continued, it was definitely a war of words and who can hurt the other one worse. Both of them at each other throats like savage hungry dogs fighting over dominance. Unable to bare it Hannah stormed out and Richard retired to his couch.
Later that night the power was out and Hannah came back into the house, tip-toeing passed Richard who she felt was fast asleep, she made her way to the children’s room, woke them up and gathered all their things. As she was about leaving, she came face to face with Richard awoke and eyes shining like that of a thief’s torchlight.‘’Where do you think you are going?’’
‘’Out of here’’
‘’Not with my kids you’re not’’
‘’Just let us go’’
‘’If you want to leave, leave. But not with my kids’’ Richard said taking them into his room,
‘’We want to go with mommy’’ Jamie let out almost in tears. Angry from what the little boy said he grabbed both him and his sister and locked them both in his closet and did same to the room door.
‘’Is that how you treat your kids, just let me take them’’ Hannah pleaded,
‘’Just go already’’ Richard said giving her a push,
‘’Don’t touch me’’ she said in reflex giving Richard a slap,
‘’I am so sorry’’ she quickly apologized, without hesitating Richard jumped her, knocking down the lantern on the stool beside the couch.
With the lantern in shreds and its flames igniting the curtains, Richard ignoring all of that continued to pound on his wife. Hannah in pain blinded by Richard’s punch’s she reached for a beer bottle and jammed it against his head bringing him to the ground.
She raised to her feet hitting him some more before realizing most part of the living room was in flames, she lunched to the room, realizing the door was lock she ran back, swallowed in the thick smoke she searched for the room keys,‘’Where are they’’ she screamed,
‘’Mom, what is going on?’’ she could hear her kids call from the room, weeping while scouring for the key she began to cough as the flames increased swallowing the room and blinding her eyes.
She had no idea how or why but she found herself outside crying and screaming her children’s name but the house was taken over by the fire. She ambled across the streets, in a daze as she observed glistening of glass cascading from the burning building as flames licked the charred window frames.
