By the time the first day of the new school year rolled around, Kano was a mess. No matter how much mental preparation she took, she had not been able to shake the feeling of dread growing inside of her. And it wasn't like the year had any potential anyway, junior year was rumored to be the hardest of them all.
The rest of the dan was excited, and in order to keep everyone happy, she had to pretend she was as well. But despite her efforts, the green-haired girl had still seen through her. Kano picked up on this quickly and made every effort she could to avoid conversation on the topic.
"Why are you ignoring me?" she asked, startling the other slightly.
"I'm not," she lied.
"Are you just nervous about tomorrow?"
"No, there's nothing to be nervous about," she replied, hoping the taller girl would leave her alone.
She did the contrary. "Kano, you don't know how easy you are to see through sometimes."
The blonde snickered and began to walk towards her room. To her surprise, there was an envelope stuck on her door. She instantly pulled it off before going into her room.
She tore up the envelope almost as soon as she sat on her bed. She could tell the letter was from Seto by the somewhat rushed handwriting. However, instead of a heartfelt note like she was expecting, it simply said "Meet me outside at 8."
What could he possibly want to tell me? she thought to herself.
Over the next couple of hours, Kano tried to catch the tall boy's every move. She noticed he seemed more anxious than usual, but figured it was the start of school that was doing that. He was also less attentive than usual, and took more time to do a lot of things that he was often able to do in a heartbeat.
Around 4, the dan decided to go to a movie. And it just so happened that it was a romantic comedy, much to the girl's dismay. Those things were often way too sappy, and it only made her more antsy to find out what Seto wanted.
Of course, everyone who needed to stand up or leave the theatre briefly happened to be sitting in their row or the one in front of them. Not that she cared about the movie, but it became irritating having to crunch up into a ball every five minutes for some grandpa to pass over him.
Kano decided to give the crowd a taste of their own medicine and got up to use the bathroom. The problem: it was her first time using a public bathroom since she came out as trans. Whichever bathroom she chose has risks. She was tempted to use the ladies' room, but was afraid that people might see her heels facing the door instead of her toes.
In the end, she went with the former. There were only a few people in there, none of which gave her odd looks. One lady even smiled at her.
Kano made her way into a stall and took a deep breath before pulling down her skirt and excreting. She was flushing, washing her hands, and leaving before she knew it. She then left and went back to the theatre.
As she moved back in, she could hear people sighing and groaning. It was expected, she was only the twentieth person who had gotten up in the hour. However, she did hear one person mutter something, followed by the words flat and masculine. Rather than reacting negatively, she just sat down in her seat. Besides, how could someone make out the details of her body in the dark.
Eventually, the movie ended. Kano, Shintaro, Takane, and Konoha had survived, but the ending broke everyone else in the dan. Momo, in fact, could not get a hold of herself and was practically choking, it was that sad.
When the group left the theatre and was in the hallway, they ran into the people who Kano heard whispering about her figure. She tried to walk quickly to avoid drawing their attention once again, but to no avail.
"16 and no curves? Your parents must've really screwed up, man," said a particularly tall and muscular guy.
"Older teen and still making immature comments to get arise out of me? Your parents must've really screwed up," she retorted.
The guy's friends went wild after that, laughing at the girl's comeback. After that, they went about their business.
"Not gonna lie, I thought he was talking about me for a second," Kido whispered.
Kano smiled, and the dan exited the building. The air was pleasantly cool, a break from the usual humidity. Momo hopped on Kido's back, and Takane began annoying Shintaro.
"Kano, can I talk to you now?" asked Seto, motioning for the girl to come closer.
She obeyed, and they went to the side of the building.
"What do you need to tell me?" she asked.
"I just...I never really gave you a formal apology for what happened that day at the beach," he said.
"Oh. It's fine, I got over it," she replied, starting to walk away.
"Wait, come back, that's not all," he said.
Kano turned back around to face him.
"I realize now that that was stupid. I was confused and afraid, and I didn't know how else to react. I immediately regretted my decision, and knew I had permanently ruined everything. Since then, I've pretended it didn't hurt, and just tried to ignore the feeling. But I realized that I have to come to terms with what I did and apologize to you," he explained.
Kano thought for a moment. She wanted to forgive him, but could she? How did she know he wouldn't do it again? He seemed genuinely sorry, but she was always told that people never change.
She looked up at Seto and took a deep breath.
"To be honest, I miss you. One could say I'm in love with you. But I don't know if I can trust you after what happened. It really hurt, and I don't know if I'm ready to take that step," she replied.
Seto nodded, beginning to tear up slightly.
"I want to take it so badly, but I just have that little voice in my head saying not to," she said.
"Well, I need you to make a decision," he said, quietly.
Kano stared at the ground. She wanted to take him back more than anything. If the lesson was learned, then perhaps she should.
"If we can do this without it being awkward and if you don't do anything like that ever again, we can try it," she declared.
Seto smiled, and the two embraced.
"You don't mind if we kiss, do you?" he asked.
Kano didn't respond, just rose up on her toes and pressed her lips to his. They heard footsteps behind them and turned to see Kido.
"I'm guessing you guys made up," she said.
Kano nodded.
"It's about time, I couldn't bear to see you two so miserable in the past few months," she said.
The three of them walked to the car to meet the rest of the dan, all of them commenting about the newly reformed relationship.
"I'm not surprised," said Shintaro.
"I wonder what the school will think," said Momo.
Kano had forgotten all about school.
"Thanks for reminding me," she grumbled.
The dan all piled into the car, and drove off. They finished getting their supplies in order and had an otherwise peaceful night. However, nothing was calming the extreme fear of the ridicule that Kano knew she might face the next day.
A/N: I'm so sorry for the lack of updates. In late August school started, dance got crazy, and I've just been overall busy. I hope you enjoyed this chapter regardless, so remember to vote & comment!
