The sound of thunder cracked through the area followed by a huge flash of light. The rain poured making the ground extremely soft and muddy. In the woods shouts and grunts were smothered by the sounds of the storm. Muddy puddles collided with combat boots running from flying arrows and bullets.
"Where is he?!" One voice shouted.
"He couldn't have gotten far!" Another responded.
"Was he even affected by the monkshood?" Said a third.
"I don't think he was." Said the first.
"C'mon let's just go, I don't feel like getting struck by lightning tonight." Said the third voice.
The boy never stopped running, when he finally came to the end of the woods he ran to the nearest building with a light on. The animal clinic.
Inside Scott was checking in on the animals and getting things ready for the next day. His shift was close to ending and his mom was picking him up due to the storm. He was just about to shut off the lights when a loud banging came from the front door, he ran to it thinking it was his mom. When he got to the door he just saw a boy, drenched and covered in mud. Without thinking he unlocked and opened the door to let him inside. The boy entered quickly and looked outside to make sure he was alone.
"Thanks, sorry to scare you." The boy said, his voice rough and cold.
"Um... No problem... I'm Scott. You are?" He said extending a hand.
"Cole." He took his and gave it a hard shake.
"What are you doing out in this storm?" Scott asked going to the back to get some towels and some clothes from his lacrosse bag.
"Nothing..." He lied and Scott heard his heart tick.
He came back with the clothes and towels and handed them to him, "Tell me the truth." He said sweetly.
Cole took them and nodded, "I've been living in the woods here for about two weeks now. These men came out of nowhere tonight and started to chase me and shoot at me with arrows and guns and they used some kind of smoke grenade but it did nothing." Cole didn't know why he told Scott all of this, all he knew was that he felt compelled to trust and tell him.
"You can go change in the back." Scott said pulling out his phone and hitting his mother's contact.
On the second ring she picked up, "Hi honey, I'm just leaving-"
He cut her off, "Sorry mom but we have a problem."
"What's wrong?" Worry grew in her voice.
"Hunters." He whispered.
"What happened? Are you hurt?"
"No mom, I'm fine. A boy showed up here talking about being chased in the woods by people with arrows and guns." Scott said
"Is he a wolf?" She asked.
"No I don't think so, he doesn't smell like one." He said.
"Okay, I don't need to know what he smells like!" She said with a chuckle. "Well if he's not a wolf, why was he in the woods during a storm?"
"He said that's where he's been living for like two weeks."
"And you were wondering if he could stay for a bit, right?" He could hear the smile in her voice.
"Am I that predictable?"
"You're a good kid, Scott, that's all. Yes he can stay, I'll be there in ten. Love you."
