Chapter 3
I slowly blinked my eyes open, cold sunlight filtered through my curtains. I must have kicked my covers off as I slept because my feet were freezing. I sat up and stretched, jumping when I noticed the small grey wolf curled up at the foot of my bed. I fell back onto my pillows as it all came back to me. The deer, the wolf, the strange woman, all of it.
I looked back at the wolf, I found it staring at me and I stared back. Then the wolf leapt off the bed and ran into the hallway, I flinched, not expecting the sudden action. I slowly slid out off my bed decided I had nothing better to do than follow the wolf into the hallway, so I followed the wolf.
I poked my head out into the hall and saw a grey tail disappearing into the kitchen. I followed with quiet steps until I heard a voice in the kitchen, it sounded like my mother. I stopped just before the doorway and waited to hear what the voice said. All I could make out was a few words—"sister", "change", and "seer". I mentally shrugged and decided this day couldn't get stranger, I stepped into the doorway.
I saw the woman sitting at the island with the wolf next to her on the other bar stool. The woman seemed to be talking to the wolf in a hushed whisper. She continued her hushed mutterings until I stepped on a creaky floor board and they froze. The woman and wolf looked over at me and I almost fell over. Well, shit, guess Mum has decided she likes wolves after all.
I stood there blinking for a moment as my mother looked at me with a concerned smile on her face. I just looked at her for a few minutes. Then I gathered my courage and decided to break the silence.
"Well, fancy seeing you here Mum"
She jumped a bit, not expecting me to say anything just yet. I looked at the wolf in the chair next to her. It wagged its tail and yipped a bit. Well OK then.
"So Mum, wanna explain to me why there is a dead deer in our garage?" I tried to say this in the most normal voice, like we were talking about the weather. It seemed to work because she looked a little surprised at my tone, or maybe it was just the question. She glanced at the wolf once again, then at me. Is the wolf really that interesting? Well it must be important since it is in the kitchen with us. OK , out of your head and pay attention Lee.
I dragged myself out of my spinning thoughts in time to hear my mother answer my question. "There is really no good explanation that does not make me out to be a crazy person"
My voice sounded slightly distressed as I said, "Unless you are going to tell me that wolf is a werewolf, my Mother is a cult leader, and my Father is the leader of the mafia; not much is going to surprise me a this point"
My mother looked at the wolf again, shifting in its chair. "Well the first part was kinda correct—" "Wait, wait"—I held my hand up to stop what she was going to say.—"hold on, so you are telling me that is a werewolf?"
"Not really, this type of wolf is a bit different than a werewolf," she said. "Oh my gosh Mum, can you just say it?" I was very getting annoyed at this point Again she glanced at the wolf, it whined and wagged its tail.
My mum seemed to take that as a signal to tell me something that had me falling out of the chair I had just sat in. "Well, it's your sister." I blinked a few times, knowing I must have heard her wrong. Ana, a wolf? No way.
During my time of blinking stupidly, the small wolf came up to me and stuck its head in my lap. I studied the wolf for a moment before I looked back at my mother. "Are you sure? This wolf looks like any regular wolf, abet this one is tame but that is beside the point."
My mother shifted her weight in her chair; she seemed to be debating something in her head. "We can prove it if you want, but it is a bit startling the first time you see it. Are you sure you want to?"
"Yes Mum, please just get on with it."
She looked at the wolf who had been slobbering in my lap. "Anastasia, go ahead, darling." The wolf stood up and began to grow and shift, I could hear bones moving in the body and I closed my eyes until it was silent. Then I felt a hand on my arm and I opened my eyes.
Well I guess my Mom is not so crazy, or maybe I am crazy too? Ana was standing in front of me holding my arm, grinning. I felt my jaw fall open as I realized that that wolf was gone and my sister was here.
"Wa—, How is this possible, Mum?" My mother took a deep breath. "It is a family trait, I along with your grandparents are wolves as well, it's genetic." I thought about it for a moment and realized something. "Well then how come I am not a wolf?"
"You are not a wolf because you father was not one, he was something different." She stopped talking for a minute then continued. "Your father was a Seer. A person that can see the wolf inside of all shifters. The only reason that you are a shifter and your sister is not is because you are the first born. The first born of a Seer always inherits the Seer gene."
I thought about the new information and decided that if I was going to keep hearing this then I was going to need a drink. "Is it OK if I make some tea before we get further into this?" My mum nodded and I stood up and started bustling around the kitchen, trying to find the Chai tea.
My mother had discovered many years ago that the best way to stay calm during a stressful conversation with her daughters was to give everyone tea. I searched for the tea a few more minutes until I found it behind the sugar; I grabbed the box and put the kettle on the stove. I suddenly remembered that the generator was broken and realized that my attempt was futile. I frowned at the stove, why does this happen to me? I sat back down in the chair, frowning.
My mother looked at me in surprise. "Aren't you going you make tea?" I sighed. "No, the generator is out. Can't you tell?" She smiled at me with that smile parents give their children when they know something the kids don't. "Honey, I fixed the generator while you were sleeping." Wow mother, thanks for telling me that earlier.
I thanked her for fixing the generator and got back up and finished making our tea. After I had passed the cups around we settle in and I began my questioning again.
