Chapter Two

I've lived in Jasper my whole life. It's a small town in the Canadian Rockies in the Athabasca River Valley.

Population: 4590

We don't get much visitors here, especially during winter when the temperatures can drop to -13,5 ˚C. When you're basically freezing your butt off.

Alice and I go to Jasper Junior Senior High School and yes, I absolutely hate school. I'd defs be a drop-out if it wasn't for Music, the only subject I live and breathe for. Alice, on the other hand, is a geek. She devours textbooks like Froot Loops. Sometimes I wonder if she might explode from all that information inside her body.

But I love her like she is my sister. I would do anything for her.

" Oh my gosh! Did you see how Derek looked at me? " Alice appeared out of nowhere, looping her arm through mine. I rolled my eyes.

Derek is the hottest guy in our school and after Alice broke up with her jerk of an ex eight months ago, she finally decided to jump back into the game. And for what it's worth, he seem to like her back.

" Yeah he's practically drooling over there. "

Her face broke into a grin. " He soooo likes me!"

" Well, if you start dating, I refuse to third wheel. " Alice just laughs and went ahead to step into homeroom.

Oh, I wish I was some place else.

By the time it was break I could practically smell my own boredom. School is a wasted 12 years of your life. 80% of what you learn will fly out of your brain as soon as you leave school. The only thing I need here is my subject, Music.

You guessed it. I'm a bit of a music junkie.

I play the guitar, violin, piano and I can sing pretty good if I must say so myself. Alice, here, is the brains of our friendship.

And if being the next Einstein isn't enough, she looks like she stepped out of Vogue since birth. We are total opposites. In just about everything. Alice has shoulder-length chestnut hair whereas I have startling black hair that falls just above my butt and where Alice has ice blue eyes, I have intense emerald eyes. Alice calls me a vampire. Well, if I saw myself I would probably think the same thing and it's not like my pale skin is helping whatsoever.

" Leah!" My head shot up at the mention of my name.

" Huh?"

It was Alice, sitting next to me at our cafeteria table.

" You know, I've been talking to you for the past five minutes and all you've been doing is staring off into space like a weirdo. "

" Oh, you're so exaggerating. It wasn't even that long !" I protested, rolling my eyes.

"Well, doesn't matter cause I need your help for tonight." With that she caught my attention.

"I'm listening."

" My parents are having this so-called important guest over for dinner and guess who has to dress to impress. "

I gave a very not-so womanly snort. "Seriously Alice, you could put on a garbage bag and still look amazing."

Alice just rolled her eyes and looked at me.

"Okay fine, I'll do it. " I wondered who this 'important guest' is. I know that Mr. Wilder is the owner of one of Jasper's major companies and basically never even see his family apart from occasional dinners. He's up before anyone in the house and leaves early for work and comes home very late at night. He's what we call, a workaholic. Alice and her mom struggles a lot dealing with an absent dad and I know Alice miss having him around like when she was a kid.

And it makes things harder when you're, just like me, the only child and I guess that's the reason she's practically living with us. My parents even got her one of the spare rooms closest to mine decorated and stuff.

Just for her.

I glanced over at her. We don't even need blood to make us one.

"I'll be there after violin practice ." The bell rang and we got up from our table.

"Don't be late!"

I smiled, "I'm never late."
