Emma's POV

"Emma, hurry up! Why are you still asleep?"

The voice ripped me away from my sleep in a second; my eyes flew open, my heart jolted and I shot up, flinging my arms around in the process. For a split second, as my mind was grasping the last bits of my dream, I thought I'd got hold of the Stone. But as my fingers clasped what was unmistakably someone's wrist, I instantly knew that the jolt in my chest hadn't limited itself to just my chest; my eyes met Lily's, and she cried in pain as she yanked her arm back.

"OUCH!"

"Wha..." I propped myself up and shook my head, because my mind was having trouble figuring out why Lily wasn't professor Squirrel, and why my hand was empty now. No Philosopher's Stone.

"What'd you do that for?!" Lily had jumped backwards and was clutching her wrist in pure agony. And I didn't get it.

"I didn't do anything!"

But as the dream slowly slipped away, my mind cleared up and I realized two things.

One: Lily was back.

Two: I hurt her.

"What is wrong?" I asked, sounding more awake now that the realization was starting to dawn on me. I rubbed my eyes and bent forward to get a better look at her. Eventually she looked up at me, still holding her wrist.

"Nothing, I—"

"What is it?"

She lifted her gaze, but the look on her face changed before her eyes met mine. And before I even saw the burn mark on her wrist, an icy cold feeling spread in my stomach.

For the first time since the accident with Will, I saw fear in her eyes.

"Nothing," she mumbled, and then, covering up her wrist so quickly that I could barely see the burn mark, she turned on her heels. "I just wanted to warn you that the bus is almost leaving. You slept through breakfast."

And she stomped out of the room, leaving me with nothing but the silence of my roommates' absence.

But my mind was everything but quiet. I'd seen the mark, and I couldn't be mistaken. I did that. I burned her wrist.

The bus is leaving.

What did she...

THE BUS WAS LEAVING!

I let out a scream, jumped out of bed, got dressed and grabbed all my stuff before I tore out of the room. I flew down the stairs, almost tripping over my own feet, but as I was running through the empty hallways of the school with the book clutched to my chest, I didn't think about Lily.

It was FTD. Field Trip Day. Once a month, the entire school packed up and headed into town for a day. Okay, I know that doesn't sound too exciting, but if you were locked inside a school all summer long, you'd understand where my enthusiasm was coming from. Plus, we all got two dollars (which we earned by doing chores) that we could spend on whatever we wanted.

I was panting profusely when I ran outside and got to the blue entrance gates. The buses were still there, luckily; I got a weird sort of smirk on my face, but then I saw Doctor Whale. He was the last one to get on the second bus, about twenty yards away from me.

I screwed up my face as I tried to think. Well, I wasn't really thinking, I already knew what I wanted to do. I just had to gather the courage to go over him and ask— but I couldn't.

Or could I?

"Doctor Whale, wait a m—" I started, getting in position to start sprinting, but before I could do that I was interrupted.
