Waking up was a pain in the ass. My eyelids felt like they were glued shut, I groaned as I lifted my hand up to my head and ruffled my side bangs back into place. Slowly my ears started to pick up the sound of about twenty-five humans breathing around me and two vampires not bothering to breathe at all. Two...!! My mind screamed at me with an accusation. It was my job to be aware of any vamp that trespass my domain without my given consent. I knew one was Ellen; she didn’t bother to take her presence without notice. But...the other vamp... My mind was churning with the thoughts of who it could be. Someone that accompanied Ellen with her trip here, but they weren’t even near one another. Ellen was standing to the left of me while the other vampire was standing to the far right against the wall, like he was observing the scene or something.

I took in a shaky breath and set my eyes in the direction of the unknown vampire behind my lids. Quickly I flicked them open and caught sight of a boyish face before it blurred and was gone. An emotion flooded through me that took over my better sense as I abandon all the rules that over years were drilled into my head and took off at full speed, blurring through hallways to reach him. The bell went off and students came flooding out of slamming doors, I avoided as many as I could but the crowd just seemed to be growing in mass by the minute instead of lessening. I finally couldn’t dodge the students so I stopped suddenly, almost giving a freshman a heart attack from my sudden appearance in front of them. I smiled at the kid not bothering in erasing that detail, they’d just believe they had over looked me and not noticed me.

I leaned against the row of lockers as my mind went on running 50 mph, I pictured everything that would have occurred if I had found out about this unknown stranger outside of this public space. My eyes shifted to the ground as my head came up with different possibilities on who it could have been. A newborn? Was the first idea my head could sum up because I’d never seen this guy before in my entire lifetime. Yet, Cam hadn’t mentioned a new addition to the numbers...

The bell rang and snapped me out of my trailing thoughts. I glanced around and the halls were empty, nobody left but the usual people skipping class or going to the restrooms. I pondered whether I should head to my German class and make up a smooth lie to Frau Steinway about being late, or just walking through the school’s exit.

I took a step towards my class when a powerful scent had me slamming back into the lockers and hunching over as my stomach cramped. I moaned as I felt my abdomen tighten to the scent of blood and cursed myself for the second time today for not sipping for the past weeks. Forcing my mouth shut to hold back the need to bare my teeth, I looked up. Ellen stood before me with a typical bag of blood dangling from her finger tips as she taunted me. I could see the school’s name on a sticker and the information that it was AB negative stuck to the side as I wrinkled my nose. Cold blood wasn’t a favorite for any of my kind, especially the ones put in hospital plastic bags. It reeked of alcohol and rotting corpse, the blood had to have been months old since this school never really used their supplies.

“Come now, Rival. I can see how famished you are.” Ellen looked down at me with disappointment. “You know better than to allow your body to work on air.” Despite my pained condition I laughed.

“What? Now it turns out you want to act like the caring mother figure you were suppose to be eras ago?” I snapped at her. “And what makes you think you can just waltz into my domain without contacting me?” I straightened out not wanting her to see me at my lowest. Hungry or not, I still ran this ground and every time I faced my people I had to represent it. Quickly taking a skim of the hallway I grabbed her from the elbow and hauled her into the closest empty classroom.

“Why come here? Out of all the other domains and quarters around the world, why mine?” I muttered to myself but knew just as well that she could hear me loud and clear.

She gave me a fierce look and through tight lips said, “I came to your domain to find you Rhine. How long to you plan on keeping this charade up? That your humane and nothing more but the normal?” She shook her head. “It’s not my place of order to correct you when you graduated the Academy millenniums ago. You’re a far grown vampire and not far from becoming an Ancient. But, this constant enrollment of high school and detachment of your people has gone long enough. If you keep refusing to show your part on the council, your domain and title will be revoked!” She hissed out the last word.

I looked at her for as long as it took until that false act of caring fell from her face. Without much my hand snaked out and my fingers gripped around her upper arm. I leaned my face in close to hers until I could feel her breath brush against my face. “I will not be told what to do, or how to run my ridiculous unending life spam. And if that’s the threat those old folks on the council thrones sent you with, then they should have sent anyone else but you. I will never take what you have to say seriously again, mommy. Message or not. I would have thought better of them then to send an outcast. ” I stayed that way a second more until my point was made perfectly as I turned swiftly on my heel exiting the room, the school, and most importantly, the scent of the blood bag Ellen had burst open in her fist.
