Hi! This is my first story on Wattpad so I hope you enjoy it! If you do I would love if you left a comment of simply just voted but if not thanks for just taking the time to read. So without further adieu here's the first chapter of Closing the Distance.

“Miss Hamilton. Miss Hamilton!”
I jerked awake at the sound of Mrs. Price calling my name. I peered up at the front of the room to see her giving me a stern look and pointing to something on the board.
“Yes?” I answered, prying off a piece of hair that attached itself to my mouth in the middle of my nap.
“Would you care to give us the answer to this question?” She asked still pointing to the board, however her question was more of a statement, allowing for no real option.
I focused my attention on the board, still trying to get rid of the sleep that remained in my eyes. Written on the board was some math equation which took me a minute to solve but I somehow got the right answer. Mrs. Price eyed me suspiciously before continuing on with the rest of the lesson.
I didn’t usually fall asleep in class but last night my older brother, Jared, decided to bring his girlfriend back to the house at two in the morning after their date and break up with her. Apparently it didn’t go as expected because it soon turned into a screaming match that lasted for two hours. I think the whole family wanted to rip his head of this morning as he sheepishly left for his morning classes at university without saying a word. Jared’s had a lot of girlfriends before but none of his relationships have lasted very long. I was used to him breaking up with girls and seeing them run out crying; it just usually didn’t happen at two in the morning. Jared graduated right before I entered high school so I thankfully never had to be on the same high school campus as him. Don’t get me wrong, I love my brother, I just couldn’t put up with his hormonal ways on a daily basis.
I checked the clock to see first hour was almost over and started gathering my things together like the rest of the class. I zipped my backpack just as the bell rang and got up following everyone out of the classroom. The halls were flooded with students as I rushed to make my way to my locker. As I neared it I noticed my best friend, Tori, was already there waiting for me. She hadn’t noticed me yet but I could tell she had exciting news by the way her blond ponytail bounced up and down and the smile on her face. I reached my locker and started twisting the lock matching the correct combination while I waited for Tori to spill knowing I didn’t even have to ask.
“Liberty, there you are! Oh my gosh, you’ll never believe it but there’s a new kid and oh my he is so delicious looking I swear I could stare at him all day!” She spilled out at a rate of 60 mph.
I had to say though; I was surprised by the fact that there was someone new. We lived on a small island off the coast of South Carolina that needed a bridge to get back to the mainland. Not many people ever moved here and the one’s that did were usually old and retired. It was rare when a new family moved into town and even rarer when they had a son, especially one as good looking as Tori was describing.
“What’s he like?” I asked deciding to continue with this conversation.
