Prologue

(Valencia's P.O.V.)

I looked up at our new house and frowned. I know it was getting hard for my parents (and even me) to bear the fact that their own daughter - my beautiful big sister that I've always looked up to, died in the house we lived in - every corner was filled with a memory of Kat. Whether it was the pictures of her hanging up on the walls to the piano she had once loved playing, it seemed like she was still in the house, so we decided to move across the town to the place that stands in front of me now. Don't get me wrong, it was a lovely house- not to mention much bigger than our old one, but it wasn't the house where Kat and I would run around the house like cats and dogs when we were younger, or the house where Kat and I would bicker, and then laugh at how childish we would sound.

God Val, you seriously need to stop thinking about Kat.

This was my chance to start off fresh - as if I had never had an older sister named Katherine Marie Chandler who was fearless, kind and had scarlet red hair and deep blue eyes that had a wisp of light freckles underneath them and - Argh! There I go again... I sigh and walk into the house, automatically coughing at the amount of dust in this place. When was the last time someone had lived here? The 1750s? As I squint and try to navigate my way through the house to find a place to put down the box in my arms, I suddenly trip and stumble to the floor while the box lands with a huge crash, and everything falls out.

Way to go, Val... You're such a klutz!

I scurry to my feet and start picking up all the stuff that fell out back into the box. Most of the stuff were textbooks and other crap, but one book catches my eye. It was a plain moleskin notebook with the words "Kat's Diary" written neatly in the middle. Did mom and dad know about this? I silently questioned myself, and as if on cue, mom walks in. "Val, could you help us bring in the remainder of the boxes?" She shouts from the front door. I quickly pick up Kat's diary and hide it behind my back before I shout back "Sure thing mom! Just wait a second, I um... want to to pick out my room?" I've never been good at lying and my statement came out more as a question, but luckily, mom didn't notice. " Of course, Val... just be quick." I noticed mom's distant voice, knowing that she was thinking of Kat, but instead of comforting her, I decided to ignore it and run upstairs instead. From there I quickly chose the first room I saw - I was like that: simple and not picky, unlike Kat, who was a perfectionist - and slipped the book under the bed, where mom and dad wouldn't find it, and run back downstairs.
