Rosalie opened the balcony door and peered out. The stars twinkled back at her, and the soft breeze carried the sounds of someone sniffling.
"Bella?" She called softly, stepping out and shutting the door behind her. "Bella?"
The sniffling stopped. "Yes?" She heard Bella's voice say. It quivered, but it sounded like she was pretending as if she hadn't been crying for the past ten minutes. "Who is it?"
"Rosalie," Rosalie said softly. She stepped out and looked around, searching for the white ruffles of Bella's dress. She found them sticking out next to the various potted plants in the corner. "Are you hiding back there?"
Cue sniffle. "Maybe," She heard. "Who cares if I am?"
Rosalie heaved a sigh, then got down on her hands and knees and crawled to the hole between some potted bush and some sort of vine that was flowering. She stuck her head in the hole and saw Bella sitting before her.
Bella's skirt was taking up most of the space, but all Rosalie could focus on was her face. Splotchy and red, she had tear tracks running down her face and more brimming in her eyes.
"I kind of can't believe you're hiding back here," She remarked as she pushed Bella's skirt out of the way and continued to crawl towards her best friend. "Like, really? The plants? Aren't you allergic to some of these?"
Rosalie didn't miss Bella scratching her arm. "I can't stand it in there," She hissed. "I hate them both!"
Rosalie sighed. Sure, Bella was bitter, but she had every right to be. They were at Edward Cullen's wedding, who, up until about three weeks ago, was Bella's boyfriend. They'd been together for a few months, and Rosalie knew she loved him.
But Tanya Denali stepped in the picture. Before Bella and Edward had even gotten together, Edward was with Tanya. And she was carrying little Edward Junior. It was incredibly problematic, especially when Edward found out and broke things off with Bella just as she was about to tell him she was in love with him.
"I mean, of course Tanya is perfectly nice and it's not necessarily her fault... But I just..." The tears started flowing again. "He's the first thing I think about in the morning, the last thing I think about before I go to sleep, and he just got married to someone who isn't me."
Rosalie had already contemplated running Edward over, and setting his house on fire with him locked inside, and tossing him into the local aquarium that was full of starved sharks, but she would feel guilty for killing Tanya's last shred of hope for her baby, as well as the man Bella was still in love with. So, instead, she just scooted a little closer to Bella and wrapped her arms around her tightly.
"I'm so sorry," She said, because that was all she could say. There wasn't any 'He wasn't good enough for you' or 'I always knew you deserved better' because Bella and Edward were almost perfectly matched. Fate just intervened, and Bella had the short end of the stick. The only true people to blame were Edward and Tanya, but it's not like they planned any of it anyway.
Bella continued to cry for a few more minutes, her head on Rosalie's shoulder. It got cold, so they just snuggled closer while Bella blew her nose on her dress and wiped her tears on the sleeve of Rosalie's.
"You're paying for my dry cleaning," Rosalie teased, wiping away the last tear with her skirt.
Bella smiled just the tiniest bit. "Whatever," She replied. Then she took a deep breath and looked around. "It is awfully cramped in here. I would like to leave now."
