"Start from the beginning, miss Amarante." The officer's voice was cold and commanding, but I couldn't do as I was told. Not this time. The memories were still too fresh. I could still smell the fire. Tears were still falling. He was still gone.
I couldn't breathe. Smoke blocked my vision, but I could tell he was there with me. He had always been there.
His coughing was louder than the roaring flames. One of his paws gripped both of mine while the other attempted to keep the bandana from falling off of his snout. His brown eyes were wild and desperate, reflecting our surroundings. He already knew what was about to happen.
"Miss Amarante," the officer repeated. I glaced around the room. Grey walls, grey floors, grey desk, silver handcuffs, blue officer. My attention was brought back to the German Shepherd in front of me as he snapped his fingers. "Why did you do it?"
He shoved me out of the way. A flaming pillar crashed down behind me. The smoke surrounded it, but I could see his crushed silhouette. His crumpled voice, barely audible above the roaring flames, called to me. I stumbled towards him, falling to my knees beside him. His paws held mine almost limply as the fire raced around us.
The officer let out a frustrated sigh and pushed his chair back from the table. "You'll crack sooner or later," he tossed over his shoulder in a hushed tone before exiting through the small white door.
