It had been a few hours since Michael and Carlisle had been transported to the hospital via ambulance. Carlisle had yet to gain consciousness, Michael hadn't left his bedside since they had been admitted.
They had rushed Carlisle directly into surgery, they wouldn't tell Michael why until a few hours later.
When Carlisle had been thrown from the small car, his head had bounced off the ground at least three times, and then he rolled into the ditch where he'd been found. Carlisle had massive brain bleeding, and with the internal injuries he had, it would be a miracle for him to wake up again.
Looking down at the boy in the hospital bed, Michael could remember the first time they met.

It was a sunny day, the snow was just beginning to melt, the sun was just reaching its midway point in the sky.
Michael had just enrolled in the first grade, another new school in another new town. He walked into the classroom, all eyes immediately landing on him. Kids whispered and giggled, pointing at the new kid. He ruffled his sandy blond hair and walked over to an empty desk. In the seat to his left, a boy with black hair and bright blue eyes had his head in a book. Michaels green eyes scanned the back of the book, his eyes widening, "You read James Patterson??"
The book was lowered, the blue eyed boy giving Michael a once over, "Do you?"
Michael nodded and the boy stuck out his hand, "My names Carlisle, but everyone just calls me Lyle."
That was when the two had become friends, and soon after, they had become inseparable.
That same week, the pair were at recess, playing some sort of game. Carlisle had ran into a larger kid, it was all purely an accident. However, the kid he'd ran into didn't think so. He turned around and pushed Carlisle to the ground, soon after, a crowd began to develop. Michael wasn't having any of this, he wasn't going to let the first friend he had the chance to make get hurt.
The kid went to kick Carlisle in the ribs, Michael had decided right then to tackle him.
Needles to say, Michael and Carlisle both ended up in the office alongside the kid who had started it all. Sitting in the principals office, they both looked at each other. They didn't know it then, but that encounter had sealed the deal on their friendship.

Michael chuckled, remembering the events  had brought fresh tears to his eyes. He sighed, looking back down at Carlisle, "If today I woke up with you right beside me like all of this was just some twisted dream. I'd hold you closer than I ever did before and you'd never slip away.."
