Prologue

My taxi pulls up in the drive, just outside my new boarding school. Getting out, I hand the taxi driver his tip, and grab my luggage. Afraid to look up, I do anyway. I stare at the castle that is looming over me. I slowly walk towards it, noticing that the clouds hide the top of the castle.

I did hear a rumor that there's infinite floors, but that's definitely not true.

Holding my breath, I walk through the sky-high double wooden doors. Pushing the heavy door open, red carpets with embroidered golden swirls greet my platform converse.

I can't believe I'm finally here.

My hands shake as I take another step, students swirling around me trying to get to their next class. My eyes scan the crowd, elbowing my way through the swarm of people. Struggling with my luggage, I stop in the middle of the crowd.

Where the fuck is the front desk?

Someone elbows me in the side, and I glare at them in annoyance, only to have deep brown eyes stare back at me. My eyes glance down to his lips as he mouths sorry, and disappears into the crowd.

I turn, and continue to shove through the crowd, coming out on the other side. I see the front desk and practically run to it, panting for air.

"Hi!" The cheery woman at the front desk shouts. "Welcome to Cromwell Academy!" Her over-lined red lips form into a smile, and her blue-shadowed eyes glance at me waiting for me to say something.

A chandelier hangs just above the front desk, creating a shadow on her face that is not (at all) flattering her features. I look at her overly-done-up face, and smile. "Hi, I'm Aviva Acker. It's my first day."

Looking past her, I see the academy crest on the wall. It's a navy and maroon C A symbol with a sword piercing through the C and A. Hmm, kind of boring. I glance back at her.

"Here is your room key! You'll be staying on the fifty-ninth floor," She states, handing me my room key. "Now don't lose that! If you do, we'll have to make a whole new one for you!"

I nod and smile, "Thank you, ma'am."

The elevators catch my eye, and I start heaving my luggage over to them.

"Oh! Aviva!" The front desk lady shouts. "The elevators are out of service at the moment. You'll have to take the stairs."

My eyes loom up to the spiral staircase, and I drop all of my luggage on the floor.

You have got to be fucking kidding me.
