In the House of Earth
CRESSIDA WALKED BAREFOOT ALONG THE GRASS, MUD CLINGING TO HER FOOT. A few paces behind, following her like a shadow, was her loyal Companion wolf, Bellatrix.
She walked towards the Forest with her long dress collecting dirt on its hem. But Cressida didn't notice how dirty it was becoming; she was too focused on the strange yearning to go inside the Forest.
The Forest was a powerful place that few dared to venture into. The ones that made it out again were never the same. Cressida had only been once before, and the memory of it was enough to leave her pale and shaking for hours. There were strange things that lurked inside: ageless monsters, terrifying creatures, ancient animals, and poisonous plants that left Cressida gaping in wonder. But worse than any of those were the people found living inside. Beautiful people that had lured Cressida deeper and deeper into the forest that the sky had turned black, despite it being the day. Cressida was placed in a trance, and followed them without fear or worry. They had tied her to a post with thorny vines substituted for ropes, and began speaking in another tongue.
And then, a wild wolf howled, and leapt in front of Cressida before the people could do anything more. It broke the trance the young girl had been in, and together, they fled from the Forest.
Now, they were going back to the forest just like they had ran from it eight years ago.
As if reading her mind, Bellatrix released a low growl as they neared the edge of the Forest. There were no trails that winded past the ancient trees, just overgrown plants and weeds. No birds rustled the tree tops, and there was no hum of insects. The Forest was silent and dangerous.
"It's alright, Bella," said Cressida in an awed tone as she gazed at the enormity of the Forest, "I'm here on purpose this time."
With the beginning of the Queentide only two days away, Bellatrix was getting more and more protective of the girl. Anytime Cressida attempted to do anything slightly dangerous, which, admittedly, happened quite often, the wolf growled, and sometimes howled to get others to notice and stop the young Queen. Cressida hated it, but she couldn't hate Bellatrix.
"If you howl right now, Bella, I will leave you here when I go to the Kingdom," Cressida warned, "and I mean it."
With a slight whimper, Bellatrix lowered her gray head towards the ground. Grinning triumphantly, Cressida unsheathed her dagger.
And, before she could change her mind, plunged into the forest.

The second Cressida stepped foot in the Forest, everything changed. She gasped, and held a butterfly hand against her throat.
The trees seemed to bend and move, making it impossible for her to tell which way she had come from. She knew that she was only one step into the Forest, but from the thickness of the trees behind her, it looked as if she were miles and miles inside.
