Chapter 1
When We First Met
I sighed for about the millionth time today.
Still no sign of my idiot brother, I thought to myself. I sat down on the airport bench, checking my watch and scanning the almost- empty airport, yet again.
My brother, Michael, should've been here over 4 hours ago. Considering he was the one to convince me to come visit him 2 weeks before I was to go on an assignment in Egypt, you would think he would actually be here on time for once. The least he could do was pick up his phone! And I didn't even have his address, so that I could have at least gotten a taxi to take me to him. But no, I thought to myself sarcastically, you just had to believe that he wouldn't forget you at the airport.
Over the years, I would have thought that being in the Air Force would make him more responsible, and less forgetful. But let's not forget, this is the same guy who left me at an amusement park for 4 hours before he realized he was missing something. At least that time it was at an amusement park, those are fun. Airports, not so much. Everywhere I looked, I saw sad departures, or happy reunions. It was sickening. Don't get me wrong; I loved the idea of a fairytale happy ending. I was a typical fairytale loving girl, with the idea of my handsome prince coming to my rescue.
I smiled a little at that, shaking my head. I learned a long time ago, though, that nobody will rescue you in your time of need. You have to learn to take care of yourself. I promised myself years ago that I would never be a damsel-in-distress, that I would never give another guy a chance to-
I broke myself out of my thoughts with a shake of my head. No sense living in the past. I was stronger and smarter now.
As I sighed, yet again, I felt a pair of eyes on me. As I looked up, I saw the brightest blue eyes I had ever seen, staring back at me. I felt myself blush, as he didn't turn away, and then he began to walk toward me. When he was no more than 2 feet away, I scanned him from top to bottom.
He looked to be no more than 25-26 years old, wearing old faded jeans that fit in all the right places, a white v-neck shirt that clung to his abs, possibly a 6-pack, and a black leather jacket to complete his bad-boy look. As I looked up at his face, handsome would be an understatement. With short, brown hair, lightly tanned skin, kissable lips and, once again, the brightest blue eyes I had ever seen, this guy could have been a model.
So, why was he looking at me?
I wasn’t insecure about myself, but frankly speaking, I was an average looking girl. At 23, I had chocolate brown eyes, curly brown hair, and at 120 lbs, I was in good shape as well. But compared to most, I didn’t have long legs, a flat stomach, or smooth skin, so, to have someone like him come up to me in an airport, well, it was a little mystifying.
“Lexi, right?” Mr.Handsome-six-pack said, breaking me from my thoughts.
“Um, it’s Alex. Do I know you?” I asked him curiously, trying to look anywhere but at his eyes.
“Your brother, Michael, sent me for you.” He responded, obviously noticing my discomfort by the slight upturn of his lips. Oh, those lips.
Oh geez, I needed to snap out of it.
I then remembered what he said.
“Wait, Michael sent you? Where is he? Why couldn’t he come get me? Why did he have to send a stranger? And who are you anyways?” I blurted out all in one breath.
Smooth, real smooth.
He gave a deep chuckle at my random outburst that sent a shiver down my spine, and I noticed a dimple in his cheek.
