I pulled out my blue sunglasses and placed them on my face, throwing my flip flops in my bag. I set up my towel closer to the gleaming ocean. I sit reading Safe Haven until I can't handle the heat of the sun anymore. I throw my shorts and tank top into the bag and head for the water.
I stand at the edge of the water just letting the cold water run over my little feet. I can see the horizon on the other side and how far one could venture out, but I stay here just letting it touch my toes. My mind rushes with thoughts of sailing out into the abyss to just think, but I'm interrupted by a stranger criticizing my waiting at the edge.
"Are you afraid to go in the water? Is it too cold? Are you looking for someone?" He asks laughing at me. When I look up from the water to answer him with intended sass, I notice his attractive facial features. His cute little freckled cheeks and chestnut hair swooping down into his deep blue green eyes.
"I'm not afraid or waiting for anyone. I'm just looking at how pretty the horizon is." I answer with sass. He rolls his eyes because he clearly is not giving up on this.
"Oh really? That sounds very convincing." I can actually taste the sarcasm. He then proceeds to smile at me waiting for a reply.
"It's actually 100% true." My hands planted on my hips. "And why do you care anyways?"
He starts to blush a little before saying, "Well, you see, I was wondering if maybe you wanted to go in with me so that we don't get eaten by a shark. And also because I want you to be able to experience just how fun I am." He smiles at me again but now it's a more pure smile with the crinkles by his eyes and a giggle.
"Well I suppose it couldn't hurt to go in with someone, but the question is are you scared of the water?" I rush in full force laughing as he chases behind me.
By the time we get mid belly deep for me, which is only waist deep for him, we have calmed down from laughing and start to just take in the nice cold water. He turns around and I pop under water. When he starts to look for me in panic, I pop up behind him and tap him on the shoulder. He jumps but pretends I didn't care him.
"I thought I lost you for a second and that would be bad because I'm supposed to make sure you don't get eaten by sharks." He chuckles.
"Well don't worry I'm still here." We return to just floating around before he taps my shoulder.
"Hey, um we've been hanging out for a while now and I we never exchanged names. What's yours?"
"Oh right, I'm Sheli. " I reach out my hand to shake his. When I go to pull my hand away he turns it over and kisses it lightly
"I'm Jack. I'm from San Francisco." I pull my hand away, blushing. "So, Sheli would you want to come play volleyball with me?"
"Um sure I guess. But I'm warning you I might beat you at it." I tuck some hair behind my ear and smile.
We play an intense game of volleyball that I clearly won, if you consider catchiing the ball and throwing it back winning. At the end of the game we collect our towels and meet up again.
"Hey, Jack I had a really great time today. Thank you for showing me some fun."
"I did too. Hey if you're in Hawaii for a while we should hang out more. Maybe starting tonight with dinner? There's this cute little restaurant right on the beach."
"I'm here for the whole summer, but I would love to go to dinner. I hope it's okay that I ask this, how nice should i dress?"
"Great and pretty casual. Though anything you wear would look great." He smirks and hugs me goodbye.
