"I can't stand you anymore. Get out!"

I was walking down the street when I heard an angry woman yelling, screaming even. I was about to walk away when a young girl ran out of the house, straight into me.
"I'm sorry." She sobbed as she got up and continued walking. I stood up and followed her. She shouldn't be alone in this condition, especially this weather. It was about to rain, heavily, and she had nothing more than shorts and a tank top.
"Miss?" I tapped her shoulder and she jumped around, fear in her face. "Im sorry, didn't mean to startle you. Um, I'm unsure if you noticed but it's about to rain. You'll wind up sick in those clothes. Please, come with me and I'll get you a jacket at least." She eyes me, unsure, then nodded and followed me.
I led her to my house as quickly as I could. The rain started just as I opened the door. She was still nervous, silent. I made some tea and wrapped her in a blanket. We silently sipped, listening to the rain.
"Who were you fighting with?" I ask. She looked up at me, afraid. She was scared to talk to me, after all we had just met an hour ago. "You don't have to talk, I'm sorry. I was just concerned."
She nodded.
"It was my mother." The weak, hoarse words struggled out of her mouth. "She didn't approve of me and so she threw me out." She sipped her tea in shame. Sensing she didn't want to talk about it anymore, I didn't push any more questions upon her.
The storm carried on well into the night. I had offered her my guest room, to which she was nervous but compliant. I haven't slept. I'm worried about her. She keeps crying. It's weird that I feel these concerns for her. We just met.
Why do I care?
