Grace woke up with the alarm clock buzzing. "Uhhhhh" she moaned. Abigail Parker walked into the small New York City apartment bedroom. "Grace!" She said. "It's time to go to school! Get up!" Finally Grace got up, showered, got dressed and got out the door. She was standing by her locker in the 7th grade hallway. She looked down the hall to see her best friend, Lyla Simmons. Lyla was only 13 but was in a wheelchair for life. Lyla claimed that when she was 6 she got hit by a school bus. Lyla came over to where Grace was standing, by her locker. "What's up Grace?" Lyla asked. She could see Grace had dark circles around her eyes. "It's nothing" lied Grace. "Were you up studying again?"
"I wouldn't call it studying, Lyla. It took me an hour to read 2 pages of that stupid history book!" Lyla sighed. "I'm sorry," she said. Grace rolled her eyes. "It's not your fault I have dyslexia and ADHD. Now let's get to class, the bell's about to ring."
After school Lyla came over to Grace's apartment. "Where's your ma?" Lyla asked. "She works until 7," Grace simply replied. They talked, ate, tried to watch a movie but Grace got bored 15 minutes into it. "I just don't understand." Grace thought out loud. "Don't understand what?" Lyla asked as she wheeled herself to the kitchen to get more snacks. "Why would my dad leave me when I was just a baby? I know it hurts my mom but she tries to hide it."
"You don't get why your dad left you, or why your mom tries to hide it?"
"Both" Grace said as she shook her head. They talked for a little while until they heard keys jingling in the locks. As the door opened they saw Abigail Parker standing there, her frizzy dark brown hair in a messy ponytail, her waitress apron all wrinkled. But she always put a smile on her face. "Hi mom!" Grace ran and gave her mother a hug. "Oh Grace! I missed you! How was school?"
"The usual, couldn't see the board, got kicked out of English. In Greek I was accused of cheating because I was the only kid who got 100% on the Greek spelling test." Mrs. Parker shook her head. Then she noticed Lyla in the living room. "Hey Lyla!" Mrs. Parker exclaimed. "Mrs. Parker, hi. How was work?" Mrs. Parker shrugged and looked in the fridge.
The next day at school started out normal. Until 3rd period, P.E. Grace got changed into the gray gym shorts and matching t-shirt while Lyla sat in the hall, reading. Lucky Lyla, thought Grace. She doesn't have to do P.E. again. And today was dodgeball. Yay *note the sarcasm* Grace was playing dodgeball (not really, just standing in the back dodging) then she noticed a new kid. He had spiked black hair, wore a choker, all black clothes, was probably 6'9 and looked about 250 pounds. Coach called game and they were gathered around the water fountain. Someone tripped Grace so she was on the floor. The Big Kid was looking down on her. His breath was green smoke. "Grace Parker," he said like a machine. "You will die today, to pay for your fathers sins." Then he turned into a big, huge, bull that stood on 2 feet. He charged at Grace as she tried to get up. She did the only thing she knew to do, she grabbed one of his horns and held on. Her hands held the horns and her body was against his back. He was roaring. He tried to back up against the wall but Grace jumped off. While the bull ran into the wall he broke through the wall, exposing the pipes. Grace had a sudden rush of adrenaline. Then she had a thought. Be the water the voice inside her head said. Control it it said again. Grace closed her eyes and thought hard about what she wanted the water to do. She raised her hands up and shouted "NOW!" The waters from the pipes made a huge wave the knocked over the monster , drowning it. Grace looked over to her classmates. They were still in line at the drinking fountain, as if nothing happened. She looked to the other side of the gym. Lyla was there, pleading her to come over. Grace obeyed all went to Lyla. "Did you see that?" Grace asked her friend. "Grace, we need to go. Now." Then, Lyla got out of her wheelchair, pushed her blanket off her legs. Her legs were a goats! "Lyla!" Grace gasped. "Grace, come on." Then Lyla dragged Grace down the hall, out of the school, and down the busy New York street. Lyla was super fast. Grace had to sprint to keep up with her jog. "What is it Lyla?"
"What was the monster?" She kept asking. They made their way into a restraint. "Abigail!" Lyla yelled. Mrs. Parker ran towards her daughter and her friend. She didn't seem to notice that Lyla wasn't in a wheelchair. "Abigail, it's time for Grace to go. NOW." Mrs. Parker nodded and grabbed her purse and keys. They all climbed into Mrs. Parkers car. 20 minutes into the ride, Grace asked her mom, "mom, what's happening?" Mrs. Parker smiled. "Grace, your father was amazing. His smile, his eyes, perfect." Grace could see Lyla's eyes rolling. "So then you were born, and everything was perfect! When you were 5 months he had to leave. He never came back." A tear rolled down Abigail's face. "But you, Grace. You are special. There's a camp for special people like you."
"You mean mentally special?" Grace said, hurt. "No Grace." Her mom said. "The reasons why you have dyslexia and ADHD is because you're Greek! Your mind is hard wired to read in Greek. That's why you do so well in Greek class." Mrs. Parker looked at Lyla. "Lyla I think you should tell Grace the rest." The rest of the car ride Lyla told Grace about Camp, the gods, how she was a demigod and how Lyla was her protector, a satyr. It was a lot to take in. Finally they arrived. Grace hugged her mom goodbye and promised to write to her and to come home as soon as she could. "Grace, you stay here for the summer. I'll see you in September." They hugged again. "I love you" Grace said. "I love you" mom said.
Together Lyla and Grace walked down the hills to camp. Everyone was staring at Grace. "Why is everyone staring? I thought you said they were use to new kids coming." Either Lyla didn't hear her or ignored her. They went to a big house in the middle of the camp. They talked to a centaur, Chiron. "Who is my godly parent?" Grace asked. "We will have to see. Maybe you will be claimed at campfire tonight. Until then, have Lyla give you a tour of our camp." He smiled. The rest of the afternoon Lyla walked around camp with Grace. They met the nymphs and satyrs, as well as see all the cabins. "What about those 3?" Grace asked as the pointed to the 3 they haven't seen. "We aren't allowed to go in there, those are the Big 3 cabins. Poseidon's kids live in one, Zeus's kids live in the other, and Hades kids in the other."
"In Greek class Mr. Allen said that the Big 3 weren't allowed to have any kids. All 3 of the gods had kids?"
"Yep." Lyla said. "All 3 broke the rules. Percy Jackson is son of Poseidon, Jason and Thalia Grace are children of Zeus, and Nico is son of Hades." Grace wanted to tell her friend that she thought she was a daughter of Poseidon because she controlled water, but she didn't think Lyla saw what she did. At campfire there was a huge bonfire. Everyone roasted s'mores, sang, talked and had fun. Towards the end when all the singing stopped, Chiron came forward. "This is Grace Parker, our newest camper. She came this afternoon she will be-" then he stopped and stared at her. No, not at her, above her head. Everyone was staring at what was above her head. She looked. Above her head was a blue trident. She gasped. It was true! Then, everyone clapped. When everyone stopped Chiron started to talk again. "Perseus Jackson" he said. "Please step forward." A teenage boy stepped forward. He was black hair and green eyes, like Grace's. His stomach muscles bulged underneath his shirt. Chiron and Perseus whispered for several minutes. Then he stepped towards Grace. "Hi, I'm Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon. And you, Grace, are my half sister."
