Awake

It had been two weeks since he had won the games and Zayn sat up in his bed for another sleepless night. He wondered if he would ever be able to sleep again. Every time he closed his eyes he would see Liam and the other boys. He would imagine visions of them hanging and being the best of friends as if the games had never happened and they were friends their entire life. Then, he couldn't fight off the image of each of them being brutally murdered. And the few times he made it past that and drifted to sleep, he awoke from nightmares ten times worse.

He lived alone in his victor house. Prior to the games he had already been living in one down the street. It was his mothers, as she had won the games before he was born. He had the choice to move in with her but since he wasn't very fond of her he took his own.

It wasn't until the next morning that he crawled out of bed and walked slowly to his kitchen where he poured himself some orange juice. These luxuries were nothing new to him so he didn't feel out of place like tributes from outline districts would if by the slim chance they got the opportunity to inhabit a victors house.

"Good morning!" The shrill voice sounded from the front door. "I trust you slept well?" The girl asked.

"Not at all." Zayn replied monotonously as he sat at the empty table.

"Of course not." She giggled and walked to the fridge removing something Zayn did care enough about to investigate. She continue to move about the kitchen and it wasn't until he heard the stove turn on that Zayn sighed.

"Alina, I'm going to ask you something," he paused and she waited for him to continue, "I want you to be completely honest."

"Mhhm?" She continued cooking.

"Why the hell don't you just leave me alone?" She chuckled at his blandness.

"Well, you see. You are the first tolerable person to move into one of these houses and I hate being alone. And I know you. It's not like you're a stranger. Plus I know you like me making you food and keeping you company whether you admit it or not. Therefor, I keep coming back."

Zayn accepted her response and continued to silently drink his orange juice while he listened to her hum as she fluttered around the kitchen.

"There you go!" She squeaked as she set a plate full of eggs and toast in front of him. He began eating and a few moments later she sat next to him and began eating from her own plate.

They were silent as they ate but neither of them minded. It was a comfortable silence.

The two sat on the front steps of Zayns new home. Zayn sitting with his back leaning against the house, his legs stretched out in front of him and his arms crossed over his chest. Alina also rested her back against the house but her legs were 'criss-cross-applesauce' and she was reading a book of which Zayn could not see the title. They had been sitting there in complete silence, like they usually did, for at least an hour.

"Alina?" Zayn asked, his gaze remaining ahead of him rather than looking to the girl.

"Hmm?"

"How come you're so happy and cheery?"

She let out a small quick, nearly silent chuckle but her face remained expressionless. She looked up from her book but still held it in front of her face.

"Well," she spoke softly and let her book drop to her lap. "If I don't, the memories creep up on me. And with those memories, comes the monster." Her gaze also remained ahead of her.

Zayn nodded.

"And..." Zayn looked at her waiting for her to continue.

"I just... Don't think about them."

"The people, or the games?" He asked.

"Both." She replied.

He continue to gaze at her as her face went front soft and warm to hard and cold. It was evident she was trying to fight back tears.

She took a deep breath and looked at him, her eyes black. "You should try forgetting too. It really helps."

Suddenly the sweet, happy girl had disappeared and her words were now dark and cold. She went back to reading and Zayn returned his gaze to ahead of him. He wondered how he could do that. How could he just forget about those people he had grown so close to, so quickly? How could he just let them go?

He promised himself he would try.
