Finn Remus was never supposed to get separated from his group, stay alert, stay strong, and stay together, those were the only rules Major Lecan had given the group of undertrained boys as they set out away from their naval training base, out into the hell the world had turned to. For a year the group had ventured, some getting killed, others succumbing to The Plague, yet Finn and three others including the Major continued on, now two years later Finn sat alone at the Cheshire Hospital For The Troubled, rifle in hand, doing pushups like he did everyday at this time. It had only been a year since the Major and the two of the boys went out to Washington DC to see if the President was still alive, Finn hadn't heard from them since their departure. The young man, now almost twenty was left behind with his good friend Kevin Maez, but sadly on a food venture Kev was bitten, and infected, Finn could still hear his feral growls before he put a bullet between his eyes the way Major had taught him. Now he just waited everyday for his commanders return, his mission simple; to watch over the tan girl they had stumbled upon, she had been unconscious since they found her, Finn doubted sometimes that she was alive at all, but the faint falls of her breath always reassured him. It was a hot summer day when they came, so hot even the iciness of the empty basement, the ceiling lined with UV lights casting an eerie blue glow over Finn's life. He was sitting at the mysterious girls bedside, well the bed he had made her in the basement at least. Finn had his feet propped up over hers, boots swaying back and forth in the blue light as he fidgeted his feet, voice echoing off the walls as he read the big book of Grimm Fairy tales his younger sister had given him many years before, like he had been doing everyday for the past year. Sometimes he'd tell her stories of his childhood, growing up in Virginia as a troubled child always stealing and fighting, or stories he had simply made up, he liked to imagine that she could hear him. "And they all lived happily ever after," Finn sighed and closed the book, setting it down on the stone floor, "sounds nice huh ? Yeah I know it does, hey maybe we'll live happily ever after huh princess ? The vamps will all go back to whatever hell made them, you'll wake up and you and I will get out of this place, start a family somewhere, maybe in the country so we can have a garden with lots of veggies, so then we can force our kids to eat vegetables. You and me sleeping beauty, repopulating the earth one sunset at a time." Finn chuckled to himself and stared down at the mystery girl, her almond colored skin glowing pale in the UV lights, long black hair flowing down her bare shoulders onto her hospital gown, Finn liked to imagine what she would be like if she woke up and found out he had stayed here to guard her. His thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of alarms, flashing red lights going off around the asylum. With a groan of annoyance Finn jumped up, grabbing his loaded rifle and slinging it over his shoulder, "Duty calls princess, see you later." He said, bending down and kissing her forehead, turning and running up the stairs, sprinting to the north way doors would banging and shouting could be heard.
"HEY LET US IN !!! LET US IN PLEASE THE BLOODSUCKERS ARE COMING!" Two blonde girls yelled, banging on the doors, guns in hand.
"IM UNDER DIRECT ORDERS NOT TO LET ANYONE BUT MY FELLOW CADETS IN!" He yelled, guilt flooding his system, just as he turned to walk away a familiar face popped into view,
"GODDAMNIT FINN LET US IN, THATS A FUCKING ORDER, HERCULES IS HURT!" Finn laughed slightly, doubting himself as he stared over at the face of Silas Lotter, one of his group members that had left over a year ago, he had assumed they all died. With a newfound hope Finn undid the rigs holding the doors closed and let them open, Silas carrying a bleeding Asian man over his shoulder, the two blonde girls and two black haired people running in, they all smelt of sweat and death. "Woah uh there's a lot of you, was not expecting that." He mummered, slamming the doors shut just as a hoard of infected slammed against them, nearly knocking Finn off his feet. "UH CAN I GET SOME HELP HERE ?" He yelled, shooting at the hands and feet coming through with one hand, holding the door closed with the other, "Got it!" A black haired boy, no older than sixteen called, banging into the door. After a few seconds the two of them managed to get the doors firmly shut, Finn setting the rigs back up. "Thanks for the help, now you and your friends up against the wall, now!" Finn barked, turning his gun on them. "Woah, woah Finn take it down a notch, I need to go patch up Hercules this is no time for interrogation!" Silas protested, pushing his ski goggles off his face into his mess of dark brown hair. "Take Hercules to the med wing then," Silas sighed, knowing already Finn wasn't the one to argue with and turned to the right, hefting his friend up,
"oh and Si," Silas turned back to Finn, who had a deadly look in his eyes. "don't go down to the basement." Silas sighed and shook his head, "She's still in there huh ? Sleeping our final days away."
"Who's still in there ? Whats in the basement?" The shorter blonde girl asked, stepping forwards. With a growl Finn turned his rifle back on them, "Something you four don't need to mess with, from here on out that basement does not exist to you, do you understand ?!" He barked, the taller blonde pulling the other back by her wrist. All four nodded, scared looks in their eyes, it wasn't that Finn wanted to hurt them, he just had to take precautions, he'd heard that some humans were even allying themselves with the bloodsuckers.
"Now, my name is Finn Remus, I am a cadet from the American navel academy of the United States of America. This is my base, my rules if you don't like that you're free to go back outside to the infected,"
"You mean the vampires." The black haired girl piped up, brushing some of her long black hair from her face, looking at Finn from under a sea of eyelashes.
"I do not believe in the supernatural bullshit the people have decided upon, this was a scientific plague distributed by a highly dangerous individual like many other virus's. Now I need all four of you to identify yourselves with name, age, and any weapons you have with you." The four exchanged looks before the taller blonde girl stepped forwards, she was tall and willowy with curly pale blonde hair, matted with dried blood that streaked her dirty white dress. "Uh I'm Winter Fields, I'm twenty one, Silas picked me and Em up from a cult gathering about twenty minutes back, they wanted to impregnate me with the seed of light or something ?" Winter set down a hammer and a shotgun at Finns feet and gave him a charming smile. Finn furrowed his eyebrows together, "Uh weird but okay." The other blonde threw down her pistol and machete with an annoyed look at Finn, "My names Emine Queen I'm seventeen." She snapped, crossing her arms as Winter stroked her hair almost motherly like. The black haired girl stepped forwards, setting down a sleek black bow and a pack of blood stained arrows, with two throwing stars on the side, "Melinda Tara, nineteen, pleasure to make your acquaintance." She said, winking at Finn, making heat rise to his face uncomfortably. "Jonah Wilcox, sixteen." The black haired boy grumbled, staying up against the wall, his long black hair falling over his eyes.
"Got any weapons Jonah Wilcox ?" Finn asked suspiously, he shook his head no. "Lost my axe out there." Deciding to believe him Finn kicked their weapons away from him, an invitation to get them back."Good, now that were all acquainted some ground rules, you listen to me and Silas, don't listen to Hercules, because he'll most likely get your nads blown off. Secondly, nobody touches that door without MY permission, no going in and out as you please, also keep bertha clean, she's not much," he motioned around them to the asylum, "but she is our base until further notice so don't make her more than a shithole then she already is. Last but not least, don't you dare go into that basement, its off limits to everyone but Hercules, Silas and myself till further notice. This is the apocalypse not some goddamn sleepover people, got it ?"
