Xander immediately hung up the phone and ran for his bike. He fumbled with the key to his bike lock and finally got his bike out and he whirled his pedals like there was no tomorrow. He rode past the deli, past his house, and past the school. Finally after what felt like an eternity he rode right into the hospital and asked where Monica's room was. When he got to her room he almost fell over and had a heart attack all at once.
Xander did a full evoluation of the machines she was on and everything else he had learned from the book he read in 5th grade called "The Cares and Keepings Of Your Hospital Patient" By Arnold Navy. So this was his first thoughts on the situation. She was all banged up. She was sleeping with all kinds of machines on her to help her breathing. One was on her finger attached to a wire that led to a screen with her vitals on it like her blood pressure, her heart rate, and the rhythm of her heart. Another one was an intubation machine. This was a machine that pumped fresh air through a wire to a long, holo tube that rides down her air way directly to her lungs. Another one was defibrillator pads and a crash cart that holds a defibrillator. Thankfully they weren't using it, but they must have been using it earlier, otherwise it wouldn't be out.
He slowly and carefully walked over to her bed trying not to wake her up. All of a sudden some guy rushed in to the room with a panicked look on his face. He asked rudely, "Who in the world are you and why are you with my daughter," he slowly walked towards me and then realized he was next to his daughter. "Oh baby what happened?," he asked his sleeping daughter.
Xander tapped on the dad's shoulder and explained, "As I have heard the story, she was walking to her house on the sidewalk when a drunk driver swerved of the road and his rear view mirror crashed into her back and broke her spine. Um- I am sorry to say, the doctor says there is a 3% chance she will ever walk again." Monica's dad collapsed on the floor like a broken toy. He started to cry hysterically on the floor.
"God, why does this have to happen to me? First my wife, now probably my daughter too. Why are you doing this to me? What did I ever do to deserve this?" He called out to no one in particular.
Xander put his hand on Monica's dad's shoulder. He asked, "Sir, can we talk over coffee?" Her dad nodded.
