“OMYGOSH, OMYGOSH!” Asha hopped back in the kitchen, bouncing up and down and clapping her little hands.
Startled, we all turned to face her.
“What?”
“What?!”
“What?!!!!”
We asked in sync.
“Omygosh! Those girls are so cool! Half of them are from India and one of them might be my distant cousin!” Asha trilled in excitement.
“I think I know who that might be.” I snickered. “She's the crazy one, isn't she?”
“FYI, crazy people are the coolest!” Asha pointed her index finger at me, her face as serious as a newborn baby.
“I wholeheartedly agree!” I lifted up an open palm before she would decide to throw something at me.
“So, what now?” Melody cut in.
“We'll just walk outside to meet the enthusiastic fans.” I shrugged. There was no other choice, actually.
I caught sight of Akram’s hand soothing Melody's. He was probably trying to ease his own tension. Akram appeared confident and outgoing most of the times, but in truth he was super introverted just like Mel.
“Groovy!” Asha sang. “I fixed the seating so you can all see each other. It's going to be an awesome day!”
“I thought auntie was gonna kill you some minutes ago.” I chuckled.
“I changed my mind.” Asha rolled her eyes. “New customers are always welcomed.”
“Good girl... Now, please make us some of your famous cappuccino. I'm dying here!” I placed my hands dramatically over my heart.
“Me too!” Akram added with passion.
“Me three,” someone shouted from outside the kitchen door and a roar of giggles bursted from the café. The girls were obviously eavesdropping.
Asha chortled. “I've got it, guys.”
“I'll help you,” Melody said and shuffled along with Asha. I knew how anxious she was to drown out her worries into her work.
With a huge grin, I brought out my small video camera, checking its battery charge.
“What is that for?” Akram asked and squinted suspiciously.
“Um! Recording… stuff,” I said, sliding the camera strap around my neck.
“Not a planner, huh?” Akram teased, lifting an eyebrow.
“I'm not. But I won't miss this for the world.” I winked at him. “Let's go, son.”
Akram sighed with resignation and motioned to the exit. “After you.”
once we got out of the kitchen, and Akram was spotted, we were bombarded with a flurry of squeals, whistles, applause, shouts and all kinds of cheerful noises.
Akram halted for a moment to take it all in.
“Whoa!” he uttered.
“Yup! Get used to this, Mr. Superstar.” I tiptoed and whispered with my hands around my mouth.
“OH MY! CUTIE PIE!”
“STAY AWAY FROM MY CUPCAKE!”
“AKRAM, WE LOVE YOU!!”
Akram’s face turned a noticeable shade of red. He raked his hair back and glared at me. “What do you think will happen if I turn around and run away right now?”
“Tsk, tsk, tsk. I don't recommend this.” I shook my head. “We don't need a hostage situation here.”
“Oh!”
“Relax and sit down. I'll be here to put it all in the can,” I assured him.
“What can?!”
“I mean I'll be recording this historic moment with my camcorder.”
“Ooookay!” Akram scanned the place, gauging the audience then he gulped. “Where's Mel?”
“I'm here.” Melody appeared with a gentle smile and a large cup of aromatic brew. “I was making your coffee.”
Akram smiled tenderly. “You're my life... Saver.”
Melody blushed and smiled coyly.
“Aw! That's sweet, but… WHERE IS MY COFFEE?!” I grumbled.
“Here's your coffee, drama queen.” Asha handed me a steaming cup of joe and turned around, shouting, “Hey, everyone! Coffee and cookies on the author!”
The raving crowd bursted into a round of ovation.
“What?” I gasped. “What have you done! I'm utterly broke!”
“You're a writer. Write up some cash, Mo.” She stuck her tongue out and pranced to her workspace.
I gritted my teeth. “Thanks, Ash.”
It's all my fault, writing you like this!
“Hey, Bay!” a tall girl stood up and waved. “Can I have some Horlicks? I hate coffee!”
Gasps rolled among the group after hearing the appalling statement.
“C’mon , Rama,” I groaned. “You're the only one who hates coffee in a coffee shop. ”
“She's not the only one,” the girl next to her added confidently, backing up her bestie.
“Ugh! Of course. Sorry, Poorna. Anything you want.”
Melody, Akram and I made our way to the farthest table. It was positioned to be the head of a quasi meeting room made of a line of every table in the café. Akram and Melody sat side by side. I took my seat to their right. Mickey fought her way to sit on their left. Everyone else took their places and the fangirling started with sighs and dreamy eyes.
“Hi!” Akram greeted his fans with his famous charming smile.
“HIIIIII , AKRAAAAAM!” Everyone crooned in harmony.
My camera was on when I turned to watch Melody's reaction. She chewed her lip with a blank expression and I knew she was internally irritated.
“HIIII, MELODYYY!”
To my relief, everyone greeted her too, which made her relax a little bit. She gave the fans a tiny smile and a wiggly wave of her hand.
“So, guys,” I cleared my throat. “Let's roll!”
