CHAPTER 5
~hazel's pov~
When Hazel had found Nico unconscious on the ground, she didn't know what to think. Nico had been gone for most of the day, which was normal. But he usually came back at noon to sit in the cabin ... Which didn't happen. Hazel had waited.. And waited... And waited. She finally decided to go out looking for him.
Hazel had woven her way through the forest to Nico's tree, and saw him on the ground. His skin was cold to the touch, his lips blue. It was almost freezing outside.
She shook his shoulders, panic rising in her throat.
"Nico! NICO, wake UP!" His eyes opened slowly, his eyelashes dusted with frost.
"W-What...?"
"Nico!" She hugged him tightly, letting go with a huff. "You were out here for hours. I was worried."
Nico sighed, shivering slightly as if he'd remembered something. Hazel blinked, curiosity prickling at her heart.
"Well, I'm awake now." Hazel helped him up, brushing some snow off his shoulder.
"Nico, are you alright...?" She looked him over. Something was... Different.
"I'm fine." Nico rubbed his wrists, staring at them.
"Let's just get back to camp then..." Hazel said with the slightest hint of suspicion.

Hazel stared at the ceiling of the Hades cabin, fiddling with a small ruby. What had happened today? Nico seemed more distant that usual, with this foreboding gleam in his eyes. Usually Hazel would give him space but... This was different.
"Nico..." She broke the silence, looking up at him.
"Yeah?" He glanced up at her, putting the rag he'd been using to polish his sword down.
"What really happened today?"
Nico froze, staring at her with his deep black-brown eyes. "I fell asleep... By my tree..." He said slowly, looking away.
Frustration burnt in Hazel's veins. "Nico! I know you're hiding something from me." She said, her voice rising.
"Hazel..."
"NO, Nico! I need to know what happened. Something's wrong with you and it's bothering me a LOT." Nico shook his head, his face hidden. "Please!"
She grabbed Nico's wrist as he tried to stand up and leave, a pleading look in her eyes.
"Hazel, let go of me." His voice was dangerously low.
"No! Not until I get answe-"
"I said let GO!" He yelled, ripping his wrist away from her violently. His eyes glowed a bright, icy blue, making Hazel shiver. She stared at him, horror in her golden gaze. Nico's cold glare faded away, leaving his now dark eyes filled with guilt and fear. "Hazel... I'm sorry..." Nico stared at his hands for a moment, and dashed for the door.
"Nico!" Hazel shouted, opening the door to call for him to come back. But Nico was gone.
